Ouch! That's 20%!!! This is why there is a bank on every corner.. if one doesn't treat you right, you just walk across the street to another. Glad they stopped the charge.. that is abusive. I guess if I were dealing with that bank I would be going from teller to teller getting exactly 10 rolls from each. So much more convenient to pick up 24 boxes at a time.
I got some great news at one of my banks. The bank where I was turning in my zinc required me to roll them and then bag them. Not a problem with 2 Glory wrapping machines.. but it still took a little time and a little bit of money to pay for the wrapping paper. I asked at one of my other banks if I could turn in pennies there. They said sure. I asked if they had to be rolled. They said it is your choice, roll them or turn them in loose in a bag. They gave me a big stack of bags for free. Now I just hook up one of the bags to one of my other machines.. a Glory counter that counts about 2000 coins per minute and seal the bag. Load up the cart and wheel them into the bank.. Very Convenient.. and No Fee <G> I guess the only thing that could be better would be if they had a machine that counted them for me too.. like you guys that found that deal at your credit union.. but I can certainly live with this arrangement.

What made them stop? It's not like a bank to back off on a fee.

The bank i deal with has a branch in the three towns that surround me.
Thats the only reason i put up with their crap.
Dont matter where im at i can always hit a bank if i need and dont have ta make a special trip.
As for the .10 cent charge....I think that was put in place for me and was there to deter me from trying to get the rolls.
I dont think they like dealing with the change or they keep a certain amount for the local stores.
Who knows....but after they started charging the fee i was going in everyday...."10 Rolls Please"
Instead of once a week or so it was everyday that they had to deal with me.
They stopped the charge they stopped seeing me everyday.
Kinda funny if you think about it.

Glad you were able to beat them at their game, and that you never paid the fee. I would have done exactly the same thing. I am happy as long as my bank gives me my 24 boxes when I stop in every week.

Ive been swamped with 2007 pennies lately. Out of 20 boxes I have gotten 5 that were pure 2007s and 3 that were 30-40% 2007s. Brinks seems to have dumped uncirculated 2007s in with old pennies. So I got a bunch of rolls that were contaminated uncirculated 2007s. I would rather have pure 2007 rolls so there would be no debate about whether to sort them or not.
I hope this is not the start of a trend. Also I have a feeling that 2007s may end being the most worthless year for collectable pennies. I think there is a good chance that the minting numbers are going to be higher than normal and only a low chance that they will switch to something else mid year (especially since the year is already half over). |

Skunk city.
Hit up 6 different banks in Barrie for $100 in nickels each. 2 boxes already searched (hand searched, marked with big black check marks) 1 box Coiunage Distribution Inc machine wrapped - all already sorted, which is a bad sign, as it means CDI has gotten wise and is now sorting their coins, 2 boxes of fresh mint rolls (no nickel) and 1 unsorted box of customer wrapped coin. I haven't sorted it yet, but it looks about 20%. All told, though, 5 of 6 boxes had no nickel. I'm going to have to head the other direction and find a place with fewer skunk boxes than Barie.

Two customer wrapped rolls plus two months worth of circulated pennies:
221 zincs (1982-2007) 59 coppers (1959-1982) ----------------------- 280 pennies 59 / 280 = 21.1%
RUNNING TOTAL -------------------------- 2854 zincs (1982-2007) 75.5% 898 coppers (1959-1982) 23.7% 23 wheats (1920-1958) 6 Canadian (1968-1995) 1 dime (2004)

Today I had some awsome finds. I look through all my moms change every week. This week I found 5 nickels, 3 copper pennies, a bicentenial quarter, and a silver 1952 dime. I also got a 1954 canadian doller bill that she found at work. |

10 out of my last 15 boxes were uncirculated 2007. Coupled with my last batch that is 18 out of 30 boxes that were crap zinc boxes. Either the bank's coin processor is running out of old pennies or I am just having an unlucky streak.
I also found out through the teller that there is likely at least one other hoarder maybe 2 using the same bank.
Another bank that I go to uses Brink's as its coin supplier and has been much better. I guess that I have no choice but to up my orders there and risk ticking them off.

Tried my hand at penny searching today.
10 rolls 500 pennies.
pre 82 total 138 wheat cents 1 copper 82's 13 total copper 152-30.4%
Neat thing was all of the 1982 cents in the rolls were copper, not a zinc in the bunch. I weighed them all and they each weighed as much as a regular copper cent. I thought the scale might be off so I double checked by weighing the copper cents. The pre 82 and the 82 were the right weight for copper.
Also picked up 4 rolls of nickels, no rare dates but there was a Canadian Nickel dated 1976, neat find.
I should have chosen "Cut-n-Paste" as a forum name, since that is what I do, mostly. |

Well since I jumped on the band wagon and got two boxes of pennies today- I went through 40 rolls out of the first box. Got 421 copper including 2 Wheaties. Had to quit, sorting the old fashion way and eyes can't focus anymore haha. My mom thinks I'm crazy- "You spent $50 for two wheat pennies?" Tried to explain the $$$ is still here I just made it better. Mark |

I have been searching rolled pennies for several months, mostly $10 to $15 at a time. But, after reading others on this forum, I finally searched my first box. Shoot, it is easier to carry a box rather than $10 or so of rolls.
Search results: 1 pre 96 Canadian 10 wheat 90 1982s (don't have a scale so kept em all) 503 copper
So, I had a return of over 20% copper, and would be much higher, I think, if I could sort the 1982s somehow. I am in a high stress profession, and I found the searching actually relaxing, and fun for that matter. In all my searching I have averaged in the 18% range for coppers. The highest percentage for 20 rolls searched was 22% and the lowest was a little over 16%. The box turned a good percentage. I have never found an indian head, or the Feathered Liberty as I believe it is officially known. I also have never run across a 1943 steel cent. How do you folks with the coin sorters find your wheat pennies, or do you even look for them? |

Since the wheaties are copper I assume they have to hand sort the copper to get them. I wouldn't know though as I am still a hand sorter. Mark |

Welcome to the board Texcattlerancher. I agree that it is much easier to pick them up by the box rather than a bunch of rolls all the time. I use one of those cloth grocery sacks with handles when I go to the bank. They easily hold up to 150 rolls if they are loose and 2 or 3 boxes if the pennies are in boxes. That way I am prepared either way. When I am picking up a big order (like 24 boxes) I take my little wheeled cart which can handle up to 660 pounds. 24 boxes of pennies weighs about 400 pounds. This way I don't put any strain on the back or compress my spine. You can pick up a cheap scale to seperate those 82's for about $10-12. Don't throw out the zinc 82's though.. check them for small dates which are going for a pretty penny right now. I would guess if a guy had a machine he would just do a quick sort for copper to eliminate 75% of the coins as zinc then flip the remaining 25% to check for wheats. I found my first 2 Indian cents a few weeks ago.. but I have sorted a lot of pennies. I have even found a steel cent. My best find so far in a circulated roll was a 1912-S in VF-XF.
