I have heard that Alcoa (AA) stock price is languishing for the time being because there is "structural over-supply" of aluminum currently (or something like that). It may be a moderately long wait for anyone sitting on a stockpile of aluminum cans. Obviously manufacturing demand is down and energy prices are still off their peak. Any counter-arguments?

Darn, I always stockpile the wrong things.

Actually, the true markets don't always strictly follow logic. I am in the market, and I have seen a slight uptick in price per ton for actual tons delivered over the last few months. While I would certainly not call it a strong market, it has been steady.

Alcoa stock price can go down due to the cost of getting the product out of the ground and market ready, rather than just the market price of the commodity. They also have to compete with existing stockpiles, so they can't push the price up to where they would like it to increase profits. The lack of short-term potential upside for them would cause their stock price to languish. There is a structural over-supply of many commodities right now. The aluminum cans require far less energy and no mining to bring the commodity to market.

Yeah, but those city zoning officers are kinda funny about that. Besides, where you live, those bales would disappear in a hurry. They only weigh 900-1000 pounds each.. the locals would find a way to steal them.
