As I was on the interstate today, I noticed a number of large pieces of scrap off the shoulder from an apparent wreck (with no car in sight), and it got me to wondering, since I haven't yet picked up much scrap besides copper and aluminum, what kind of roadside scrap would be worth picking up and what kind should just be left behind or less lucrative? One piece I remember was definitely a fender. I might venture back later tonight to see if it's still there.

This piece looked metallic. Could it be metal, or do they make fiberglass look like chrome?

they make spray paint in crome, so I dunno, unless it was a piece off an older vehicle. Plus you gotta factor in the danger of the HW.

It is probably steel, aluminum, or painted plastic, maybe chrome. If you think it is worth it just use a magnet, but then if it is aluminum you need to test it with a small saw or something.

OK, my curiosity got the best of me, so after getting off work around 1 a.m., I got on the interstate and headed back to the mile marker where I noted that I saw this piece. Actually, the first large item I saw was what appeared to be the side panel for possibly a large-ish refrigerator--it was coated with some kind of veneer, I couldn't tell if it was a plastic-like coating or whether it was paint, but I left it by the side of the road and may go back for it later if I can get access to a pickup. I'm guessing it was made of steel, judging from the weight. Any idea what something like this might command per pound?

Anyhow, so I got back in the car and kept driving and about half a mile later BINGO! There it was. I'm 99 percent sure this is the front fender for a semi tractor, and judging from the weight and appearance and the fact that it's not magnetic, I'm guessing it's aluminum. It probably weighs 10 pounds.

Why gold and silver of course, silly.....

Just go only to wrecks involving Rolls Royces,Maybachs and Bentleys. High end stuff, you know...

I would stay away from wrecks involving Chevy or Chrysler cars cause their only driven by commoners, therefore more likely to be have only imitation gold or silver trim and hood ornaments.

Of coarse there may be a collector value to those parts though, seeing that they'll soon be bankrupt and out of business.

Japanese car wrecks should be ignored unless you can pick up one of those - Super Duper cool after market stainless steel "fart" can exhaust tips.

Remember, there's platinum in those catalytic converters too.

Just take your sawzall in case they haven't moved the wreck away yet.

(P.S. You have to be real quick about this though. You have to beat the tow truck, police and EMS.)

Good luck, tell us how you make out...

OK, it just so happened that the same trip when I picked up the large piece of roadside scrap mentioned above is also when I happened to drop my camera in a puddle. But now that I have a brand new one (a new camera, not a new puddle), I'm finally able to post pictures of my find:

Organize your local chapter of "adopt a highway" and go on weekly or monthly "volunteer clean-up trips". You could maybe even get the police to put out an orange warning sign for motorists on your schedualed day!

And he that hath lyberte ought to kepe hit wel / For nothyng is better than lyberte / For lyberte shold not be wel sold for alle the gold and syluer of all the world.

Bingo.

This piece doesn't appear to be magnetic. Could it be all aluminum? Not that I'd take it to the scrap yard at current prices...

Good ones are stainless.

Cheaper ones are aluminum.

Stainless hard to bend and scratch.

Aluminum easier to bend and scratch.

I could probably tell by a picture of the top

of the fender.(shiny or matte finish)

Either way, convert it to silver.

Good find...

Yep. Aluminum trailer fenders aren't uncommon.
