You don't want to go there - SHTF. While knowing how to use a gun is a good thing - hunting for food and some minimal protection of your loved ones and your stash, it's naive to think your small arsenal will keep you safe.
This does have security implications even if it's not self-defense per se. Having a safe place to hide you and your preps might be a necessity at some point:
the topic of security is very broad. also, your preparations are still worthwhile even if not effective against a platoon of blackwater mercs. in other words, there is a range of threats you will face and the blackwater mercs is the extreme end of the range - some simple preps will have you ready for most of the threats.
1. operational security - keep your mouth shut and have preps hidden/secure. 2. exterior lights and drive way alarms 3. clear bushes and hiding places. 4. reinforce locks hinges doorbolts. i have some wood pieces cut to fit in my windows to keep the window from being forced. 5. monitored entry alarm increases the chance the police arrive if your house is attacked while you are gone. 6. hiding/securing valuables makes an attack more time consuming. average police response time is 12 minutes for a violent attack, longer for B&E. as the clock ticks, its a matter of risk/reward. 7. the sound of a dog or a shotgun pumping can make a bad guy reconsider his choice of targets.
