OK. I'm tired of only being able to drool over all of your great finds coming from bags of pennies rather than rolls. I want to be able to search through pennies from bags too. (I couldn't find a "whiny" emoticon to put here! )
Which banks are you able to get bags from???
I'm in Central Florida and we seem to have a good variety of banks in the area.
On Friday, after going to two of our banks and getting a NO to bags of pennies--sorry, we only get pennies in boxes, my husband sat down and called every bank listed in the phone book for our county. NONE of them have pennies available in bags.
Any suggestions?

| Any bank with a coin counter should at some point have a full bag of pennies for you to search through. Of course you risk the chance that someone doing what we do may have filled the bag with zincolns, but then again there is a chance that grandma just emptied her change jar in there too. So be persistent and ask what they do with the bags from the coin counting machine when they're full. |
My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

From my experience they get the bags from rolling machines. The banks in my area said that they have to give the bags of coin to Dunbar, however if you can work something out, then they can call you when they get a full bag and you can pick it up. If they call Dunbar first, then they can't give you the bag. The problem is you have to develop a relationship most times before they will let you buy bags, you can't just walk in and get one, because you have to ask them for the bag before they call the pickup service.
So I think your best bet is to find a bank that has a rolling machine, and ask them for the bags. If they say no, develop a relationship, and ask again at a different time.
I'm not sure how everyone else does it but this is my experience. |

Credit Union does not have bags either. No coin counting machines at any of my banks or credit union.
Appreciate suggestions so far. Thanks. |

| It's sort of funny the two banks I got to here in michigan only have bags and do not have the 25 dollar fed boxes. I personally don't get the great finds your talking about however. About the best thing I have every found was a 1909 wheat, not even VDB. |

I understand where you are coming from!
I went a long time only getting boxes of pennies and spending tons of time cracking open rolls etc. Finally have lots of "chocolate to the vault teller" who does ordering I was able to "sweet talk" my way into getting her to order pennies by the bag loose.
It took some time and patience on my part and so far it’s paid off! Also as a bonus my pennies are coming in canvas bags so I get a free bag to later store my copper!

I haven't beeen able to get bags either. I would look for any financial institution that has a lobby coin counter and try to develop a relationship with the coin person at that bank so I could buy the bags. Since none of the banks in my area have coin counting machines, there are no bags to buy. Next best thing is to have a relationship with several banks. Most of my banks give me a phone call whenever they get a significant amount of pennies deposited. One of my banks called me twice last week.. once for $180 in CWR and once for $140. This seems to work pretty well for both me and the bank. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available. |

Don't worry about being bagless. You really aren't missing much, especially when it comes to all the real junk that finds it's way into bags that would never make it into a box. The worst is open safety pins. The only time a bag is better is when you get extemely lucky and get a bag after a wheat dump and that doesn't happen too often. You can also get the other extreme - all zinc. |

Thanks, everyone, for your wonderfully wise words!
I am on great terms with the vault manager with our main bank and she assures me that they can NOT get bags of coins--only boxes. Guess I will have to make do with what I am able to obtain. It just seemed to me that all the good scores of wheats and/or IHs came from bags rather than boxes. And, I admit to being jealous.
Actually, having any of the tellers call me wouldn't work as I would not be able to get there until my husband had a day off work when they are open and they might not like the lag time.
One had tried to call me recently and couldn't get through because I was online all day so I gave her my cell phone number next time we were in the bank. She had actually gotten a few rolls of half dollars for me to look through for my son's birth year for the coin project I am doing for his 25th. She had saved them for me, thankfully. Only found four from my new daughter-in-law's birth year so will give those to them this Christmas in little stockings. None, from my son's birth year and probably won't but will keep trying if/when I can find any to search through and hope that I will get a few in the the next three years.
I guess we just live in an area that hasn't moved forward with the times, ie, coin counting machines for customers, etc.
I should be happy with what I have but you know the old expression that the grass is always greener on the other side...I want to find an IH penny in the wild.
Continued success to all.
Enjoy! |

Most of the people that order coin for banks have "blinders" on and cant see things out of their usual rutine!
If a bank is ordering coins from the fed they will be delivered by an armor car service. NORMALLY the armor car service rolls the coin and charges the bank XXX in fees for the rolling. However, since the bank is ordering coin from the fed they CAN request that the armor car doesnt roll the coin. The armor car cant tell the bank no because the bank is ordering the coin from the fed and not them. Yes, the armor car company delivers the coin, but they are being paid to deliver.
However, if the bank is ordering coin from the armor car service instead of the fed, the bank can tell the bank no.
