so i'm looking into buying silver rounds and or bars to invest with. im seeing prices at one site for about 12.85 for a silver round and the ask price of silver at the time was 12.20 an ounce. doesnt seem like a bad deal.
is it better to buy silver in a local shop somewhere or online? all i want are bars or rounds, i dont care about commemorative this that or the other and i know people charge more for those and thats not what i want and i suspect thats what i'll plenty of locally.
one site charges 9.95 for order of 50-499.99 dollars for shipping. plus 3% of the subtotal but if you pay with check/cash moneywire, etc. You must be logged in to see this link. there's the urle of their shipping info. they seem to have decent prices but im not thrilled about the shipping charges but...metals appreciate so over time the shipping costs pay for themselves i suppose.
basically i just want to buy silver for the silver, not the engraving on it.

Welcome to the forum. I just bought some generic rounds from a local dealer yesterday and I paid $12.30 per 1oz round. I have bought most of mine from a local dealer face to face cash so there is no paper trail. I have bought a few things on e-bay when I catch a deal(not real often). I know a lot of people buy from apmex and have been very happy.

Hi SmokeMonkey...welcome!
I like buying silver rounds from local dealers, for the paper trail reasons mentioned above, and to save on shipping charges.
I have used Apmex a few times and have been satisfied with them.
Like OK said, you can get good deals on ebay every once and awhile, but the auctions for small amounts of silver usually get bidded far beyond spot. I have had the most success when I am up at 3:00 in the morning on a weeknight, and look for silver auctions that are ending right then. If you are not too familiar with ebay be sure to check out the seller's shipping rates before you bid...sometimes they get a little silly with their shipping charges. I almost bid on 2 ounces of silver once that was ending at well less than spot before I realized that he wanted $15.00 to ship.

ive checked ebay and most of the small lots are beyond spot by at least 2 dollars and thats without shipping charges and tghe insurance.
some time soon i'll check out local dealers and see what i can find.
i might also buy some 5 10 and maybe...100 ounce bars...would it be better to buy in 1 ounce pieces only or would a variety be a good idea? i'd think a little of the bigger stuff to go with the one ounce bars and rounds would be good.
i'm also thinking of buying gold bars by the gram. i've seen those going for a hair over 25 bucks on apmex. they have 1, 2.5, 5 and 10 gram bars. i figure it wouldn't hurt to get some of those too.
but for now i'm gonna start with one ounce silver bars and rounds and work my way up. great thing is the price of these metals goes up and if you think long term, 30 plus years, these bars and rounds will more than pay for themselves. i just cant imagine gold or silver suddenly becoming worthless ever. |

Welcome from me also. The main place that all my collecting buddies get bullion, me included, is Tulving Co. They did like 5b last year in sales yet always nice as can be on the phone and even break their minimum order if you ask (within reason of course). Ship is free and almost everything is 2% over spot. $1000 face of 90% silver coin looks good right now @12.16 per.

Anyone check out the site in the above post? It looks like they have a good deal on the 90% silver coins. |

The best way to find auctions on eBay that don't get bid up alot is to not search for "gold" and "silver", but rather to search for "glod" and "sliver"

That's funny, I thought I was the only one who did that! Actually, I never even thought of 'glod', but 'sliver' usually pulls up a few auctions.
Another good tip is if you are ever up really late on a weeknight, like 3:30 Wednesday morning, pull up the bullion auctions that are ending right then. A lot of people like to wait until the last minutes of the auction to bid, and most of them will have fallen asleep.
