Poll Question:
To ask this question here is already quite biased, but I thought I may ask anyway...

Some of my friends toss pennies aside or "accidentally" drop them on the sidewalk in lieu of having to carry the useless weights around. (I even have one friend who hates dollar bills!)

Personally, I keep all the change I receive (if I leave a tip in the charity jar or on the table it's in bills), but don't usually pick up loose change on the ground, unless it's on heads, of course. I consider myself somewhere in the middle of the range; not quite obsessed, but not exactly indifferent. Where are you?

Choices:

Love ''em!
Hate ''em!
Indifferent
Utterly obsessed!

As far as I know, it is stated "In God We Trust" on the US dollar. How can I trust this currency if I do not believe in God?

Possession is nine-tenths of the law.

When I give my two cents, they're always copper!

I pick up every bit of change I see. It all adds up....

Deal

Live free or die.
Plain and simple.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

I'm borderline obsessed. My daughter and I routinely walk around with our eyes on the ground looking for pennies and change. Best score to date was 27 pennies (5 coppers), 3 dimes, a quarter, and a nickel in one trip to walmart! My wife rolls her eyes at me all the time, I just simply say hey every penny counts, if they didn't we wouldn't have them! I also used to climb under every coke/vending machine looking for loose change as a child, so some might not call that normal, lol.

I pick up coins and $20s whenever I see them, and always have. No useless weight in my pockets ever!

I find about 1-2 pennies a day lying on the ground outside or on the floor in my company, and most of the time they are coppers. Found a few dimes as well. Up until about a year ago, I wouldn't bother picking up change on the ground unless it was a quarter, now I scan the ground everywhere I go looking for dropped change.

One sign of obsession is when you get upset that the cashier gives you back a nickel in change when the exact change should've been 4 pennies. I hate when they do that.

To be honest, I'll even pick up a penny off the ground if its not heads up. I'll force it to flip heads up and then pick it up. :)

I live by Ben Franklin's saying "A Penny Saved is a Penny Earned"

I have friends that tell me they won't pick up anything less than a quarter up off of the ground.

And I actually saw someone at work pick up a penny and throw it in the trash. I asked them why did they do that and they said its because they never use them. I promptly got it out of the trash (didnt have to wade through anything discusting).

Amazes me how wasteful a lot of Americans have become.

I use to pick up several pennies in the parking lot of my company and even inside on the floor every week. I placed a glass jar on my desk and put a sign on it saying "penny jar". I have everyone pitching in pennies everyday. I'm not scoring many dollars worth but I don't pick them up anymore cause there finding there way into the jar, lol

When my wife got after me it sounded like "Blah,Blah,Blah", but now it sounds like "Clink,Clink,Clink". Its amazing what that Ryedale can do for a hounded husband.

I've pryed pennies out from melted asphalt.
Toss them in the alcohol jar for a while, then into the hoard they go!

There's profit if you melt things!!

I pick up all coins and I don't think twice about it being heads or tails up. When I get in line at the grocery store I tend to look at the floor and pick a lane where I see a coin(s) just waiting to be picked up.

This reminds me of when I learned to drive. I would look EVERYWHERE for road signs, heck ANY sign, and read/interpret it and follow the instructions if applicable. Bad analogy, but really what I'm saying is, "if you're looking for it, you'll find it!"

At one time i'd even swap out zinc for copper at the "need a penny/take a penny" dishes.....that was a few years back and a few tons ago....now i do not even keep them in raw change...every chance i get to rid myself of pennies in my pocket change....i do....even the copper ones....

Quite a change for me (yes, punny) - perspective of 7+ tons I guess....

Pretty much hate the penny....and the nickle and the dime.....

Wish we had a $0.20, $1, $2, and $10 coin only....I can't stand filthy rotten $1 FRN bills. This would bring some respect back to coins.

Plus you can toss $1 and $2 coins a lot easier upon the stage at strip clubs as compared to $1's (just kidding....).

They could make modern coins "sound" by alloying with something small like 5% silver.....

Let's just call a silver dime of 90% silver worth about 10X face....roughly (no calculator) 100% silver = 10X face.....so 10% silver would equal face....but let's also say silver is way under valued right now by 2X or more.....just make dimes with 3% - 5% silver content....or better yet, kill the current dime and quarter and make a coin about the size of a nickle and call it $0.20....and then to avoid a massive $1, $2 and $10 coin....just keep them reasonable small aan bump up the silver %...that would roughly make a $10 coin between the size of a quarter and half dollar and be 90% silver. You could make $50 and $100 coins with some very small % of gold.

That is what we need. Even if we revalue Silver at $100/oz and Gold to $5000/oz...this would work.

Just make something sound...even if it is 3% to 5%....

I normally pick up all the change I see, There is only one time in recent recollection that I didn't pick up some. Someone had a pocket spill in a parking lot in a puddle and there was a couple quarters and a couple dimes which i snatched and about 30 pennies which I took a few of the obvious copper ones but since I felt like a fool sifting through a puddle for pennies, I stopped after a few :/

Honestly not a day goes by when I don't find money on the ground. This morning just one penny...a 2003-D. I do have locations that yield more than others...especially below kiosks, vending machines, and ticket windows.

Thanks for reviving this. Don't know how I missed it the first time around.

Gosh, this stirred more memories in me reading and thinking about this topic/poll.

When I was a little girl my parents owned a small independent grocery store in a very small town. I can remember getting off the school bus behind their store and running to the back door and coming in and looking to see if my mom or dad had put any money up for me in the special spot on a certain shelf. If there was any there, that was mine and it was "found" money. That means they found it when they were sweeping the floor and they gave it to me. Most days there wouldn't be anything, but occasionally there would be a penny or two.

Later on, after the cool toy called a Creepy Crawler came out I would sit and make those plastic worms and such out of the plastigoop (I think it was called something like that) and my parents would sell them for a penny or two each for artificial fishing baits. I'd excitedly check every day to see if any had sold and if there was any money for me from these.

Gosh, thanks for another trip down memory lane. This may be a forum for penny lovers, etc. but it sure has caused me to remember lots of memories that I hadn't "remembered" in a very long time.

Enjoy your coin searches, everyone.
