As a new member of the penny hoarding culture I am recently poised with this observation. I have been hand sorting through a box a day and collecting them from various banks in my area. Slowly a I am encountering that I am tapping out these institutions. As I am not ordering bulk they have been either going to the vault or just dumping there tray of on hand pennies.
My observation is that as I have been slowly diminishing their supply they seem to be cracking open the mothballed pennies. They are wrapped in old paper and actually have that smell of storage. (Kinda funny I think but anyway)The results of this have been that I am gathering some beautiful mid eighties pennies and also a increase in copper percentage. My typical brinks box with the plastic wrap will garnish 22%-26% copper respectively. These mothballed pennies are producing 62%-66% plus copper. I am ecstatic! I know that this is a short lived venture but all the same exciting.
Being new to this I have very little that I can honestly ad to a extremely knowledgeable forum but thought this was interesting enough to post.

Thanks again to all and happy hunting!

That is very interesting, cptindy! Keep buying from those banks, because you will not get that good of a percentage anywhere else. Lucky! Keep on feeding your addiction!

enjoy that rate of copper because as you said it will go down. That tell me that you may be the only one sorting in your area right now

I have also had better results with CWRs. They seem to be chock full of copper. Usually they are stripped of wheats but I don't mind.

I just found a 1990 penny with the state of NY stamped just to the right of Lincolns nose with a NY in the center.

Any Idea what this is all about???

Putting it under a glass I notice it also has an odd stamp on the reverse with a line just inside the perimeter between states of America ending in a weird fade smear of the a at the end of America.

I found almost the same thing with a 1974 penny with an Arkansas stamp.

I believe there are pennies with all the state outlines. There is also someone who just started collecting these, somewhere here on RealCent.

I have one that has ND, but the outline is not the shape of North Dakota.

Right the state outline is not to exact shape and I actually thought it was just someone engraving until I looked further to see it was a stamp and that it said NY.

Odd! If there are all states on some various coins why and what meaning did this have for someone to do this?

Anyone have any history on this?

There are all 50 states stamped out there. I believe they are called counter stamps.

The one I found had an outline of Arkansas, and inside was the abbreviation for the state, "AR".

They are counterstamped pennies. I've found them with Hearts, JFK, The outline of the USA. Every one I've seen is stamped on the right obverse.

Cptindy I experienced the same thing when I started. I got lots of CWR's with solid copper. Now I pick up a standing order of 100 dollars (brink boxes) from 2 banks every Friday. That's all I can handle sorting by hand. I've been getting between 16 and 22% cu from machine rolls. The cool thing as a hand sorter I'm finding a lot more wheats in the machine rolls.

Anytime I have found an Indian Head it has always been in the plastic rolls from the bank not the rolls an individual turns in.

I noticed this as well. I get more copper yet less wheat pennies from the CWR's.

I also seem to get just as if not more excited finding the s stamp pennies. They don't come round here often. Just got a 72 s! he! he!

I have a full state set of the state counterstamps. Pretty cool. I bought them off a member here just to have them. I've found all kinds of them in my searches. All kinds of stamps on them.

My percentages have actually grown from my bags. Boxes are about the same. And I've sorted a few pennies.... There used to be a very large sorting operation real close to me as well. It all depends on how/where you source you coins.
