Usually when I go out to yard sales it is hit or miss when it comes to finding nice items.
Today was a real winner of a day.

First yard sale I wnt to I bought a 14K gold bracelet for $20.
The melt value is $33 so that was a nice find.

The next few I went to didn't have anything I was interested in.

While driving around I found a multi family yard sale that I had not seen advertised.

This one was the jackpot for me.

A guy was selling some of his coins and said that he had not kept up with the prices so what was marked was what he wanted.
I bought-
4 war nickels for 25¢ each (they were all he had)
1 1948 dime for 70¢ (only one he had)
3 Morgan silver dollars for $11 each (the price was about right)

A 1878 CC Morgan for $30 in Fair grade (not a bad buy If I do say so myself.)

The best buy from the guy-
A Indian Head Penny dated 1909 With an S on the back
He was happy to sell it and I was happy to buy it.

Before I left the sale I decided to check out the loose jewelry that his wife had. I bought a pair of earrings marked 50¢ since they looked nice and I figured I could sell them at a later date.
I took a closer look at these earrings and saw 14K stamped on the stems. The melt value for the earrings $5.

I doubt I will ever have good luck like that again at yard sales, but part of the thrill is in the hunt.

Remeber, never expect to find anything when you go to yard sales, when you do this you end up finding the good stuff. Its kind of like using reverse psycology on the universe.

I change with the times-
but like silver coins found in your change
I stay the same.

The yard sale season is on us again. I typically score 30 troy oz sterlingAg and 30g 14 ktAu in a typical season for roughly $100. I have good eyesight and can see even the faintest markings on jewelry. I bring halves and ikes which I bargain with, seem to get an even better bargain with these. I know the approximate gram weight of each piece of jewelry from experience and will offer a fair price for all they have. Buy only marked jewelry. I have a magnifying glass that I affixed a supermagnet to that helps me avoid mismarked/chinese jewelry. Look each individual piece over, cull for yourself the marked pieces, check with magnet, buy/bargain for the stuff that is non-magnetic.

Magnetic sorters, no moving parts except the coins

How much did you pay for the 1909-S IHC?

My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

My auction just ended for two of my 2009 garage sale finds found within walking distance of my house. I sold them as a lot and got $35.00 for them! My cost was $1.00 for the pair of weighted sterling creamer and sugar bowl and .25 cents for the arrow head. $1.25 investment.

Someone in Germany bought them and is willing to pay $20.00 for shipping! There are some nice items out there if you have the time and the eye.

The price for the 1909 S Indian Head was $240.
As I mentioned, the guy was not as up to date with prices (he said so himself)
and he was glad to make the sale.

He mentioned that he had more items in his safe deposit box so I think this 1909 S was a duplicate he was willing to part with.
It would grade Very Fine 20 at least.

Yard sale finds part 2

I found a yard sale today that was unadvertised and decided to try my luck.
I found a pair of earrings but couldn't see any mark on them, but figured I couldn't go wrong for fifty cents. After I got home I found 925 faintly marked on the inside of each one. After weighing them and calculating what the melt value would be it came to $3. Not a bad buy for fifty cents.

At another yard sale I found mint sets in yellow envelopes from the US Mint. I thought they were uncirculated sets and saw they were dated 1961, 1962, 1963 and 1964. The sale price was $10 each so I bought them all.
I looked at them more carefully at home and found that the envelopes had a pink card in each one stating "Your US Proof Coins have been carefully inspected, and then sealed in a transparent envelope." I had no idea this is how proofs were packaged back in the 1960's. I did a bit of looking around and found that they sell for $16 each, a nice find for $10 each.

.................................
A story of woe that you may want to keep in mind if you ever do any yard selling yourself-
As I bought the coin sets I was told that someone earlier on had walked off with two sets when the sellers were preoccupied (there is no one lower than a thief at a yard sale.)
When I was doing yard sales and church sales and I wanted to sell some better and pricier merchandise I did the following before the sale-
1. I took an old briefcase that had seen better days.
2. I cut a hole into one side of the briefcase. The hole took up 90% of the side but left 10% intact.
3. I covered the hole with a piece of hard clear plastic and taped it in place.
The result- a home made cheap display case. If someone wanted to steal anything they would have a hard time taking it from a closed case. For extra protection I suppose you could take a piece of rope and tie one end to the handle of the case and the other to the table where the case rests. This makes it impossible for a dash and grab thief from picking up and running off with the case, they will have to drag the table with them and I doubt they would want to, or be able to do that and make an easy getaway.

I change with the times-
but like silver coins found in your change
I stay the same.

Just picked up a 6.9gm 10kt gold chain from the 25cent table at a garage sale tonite, also got misc .925sterling trinkets totaling 12.1gm for $1.10. Its been a pretty dry summer for the gold, glad I stopped at the (second) worst looking yard sale in town and picked up the necklace. The worst looking sale caused concern for bringing home inappropriate language-a-roches and no good deals. Total for summer of lightweight garage sailing: 16.2gm gold 10-14kt and 57.7gm sterling at a cost of approx. $5.50.

Magnetic sorters, no moving parts except the coins

For most of us the great finds are few and far between. They are the equivalent of buying a scratch off lottery ticket and winning $500, its a great thing to happen but don't count on it happening on a regular basis. For me, two great finds in a yard sale season is the most I can expect and the most I do find.

I think you would have actually done better with them as mint sets. Proof sets for those years are pretty common! Either way, not a bad price!

My yard sale finds today-
Found a 3 piece brass table center piece for $5, weight, 8 pounds.

Picked up some brass objects for $1.75, weight 11/2 pounds.

Bought a pin which is in the shape of a silver colored coyote with its head pointing towards the moon (or sun since the disc is colored yellow, probably brass.) there wasn’t any 925 marking that I could see, but it was made in Mexico and for 50¢ the price was right.

After I was home I scratched the back of the pin to reveal the metal under the surface and used a drop of silver test solution and both the surface and the metal underneath turned red, meaning silver.
The weight of the pin is 12 grams, since I can’t figure out how heavy the brass is compared to the silver I will guess the total silver weight is 6 grams.

Not a bad day, though it was tiring going to so many different sales, some were not listed in the paper so I found them by accident.
