I'm going to one this Saturday and I'm interested in knowing if anyone has found silver coins at a decent price.
Thanks,

Hi there-
I have been to a couple, but my opinion is you're not likely to find great deals. Actually, it's usually the opposite. Way overpriced stuff. You can haggle though. They're also good places for non PM-related stuff, like books and such.

The same thing, really. And good luck finding anything good. If you have a scale, bring it. I've heard stories of people selling fake silver coins at flea markets. Don't know if it's really true, but as they say, "Buyer beware." |

I would think you might have better luck at a yard sale.
I bought a bunch of wheat pennies from a guy at a yard sale for 3 cents a piece and there were some in the 1910's. He also sold me some Australian 3 pence. |

| You can find coins and silver at yard sales. I picked up 4 SAEs at a yard sale today for $13.00 each. Not great but a good bit cheaper than at the coin shop. I've found Kennedys in the past too. |

Swap meets/flea markets usually consist of 90% dealers who know what they are doing and know the prices of silver and gold. The other 10% are first timers trying to clean out their garage, basement and attic who have no idea what they have, they just want to get rid of as much as they can. Some of the first timers may live on streets with little traffic or didn’t sell much the first time they held a yard sale so they are trying their luck with a swap meet/flea market.
The good finds will be few and far between, but on occasion (on rare occasions) you will find something worthwhile, silver or gold wise. Don’t just limit your thinking to silver coins, sterling jewelry sometimes gets tossed in the junk jewelry bin by careless sellers. (Junk jewelry to me means costume jewelry that was not made out of silver, gold or gold filled.)
Don’t pass up church sales if there are any in your area. Again, it will be dealers and first timers, but the mix seems to be 70% dealers 30% first timers. Don’t pass by the church table without taking a look, I found a sterling ring among the donated costume/junk jewelry.
Reminder: take a magnet along. Real Silver should not be magnetic.
Take a jewelers loupe along to read jewelry markings or details on coins. Maybe the first timer didn’t realize their jewelry was marked sterling, jewelry markings are hard to see without a strong magnifier or a loupe. |
