Interesting perspectives from a couple people who posted on Survivalblog--they're saying that after the dollar collapses and everyone starts pawning jewelry and similar items to survive, people will learn rather quickly what REAL money is:

I had not thought about this until I read the link you provided, but from this moment forward, all birthday, Christmas, anniversery, etc gifts to my wife should be gold jewlery. Not the most economical way to buy gold --- but if ya gotta spend money for a profunctory gift anyway, might as well be sumthin' ya might find a use for later on.
