Does anyone have an idea how to sort out Pre 1979 Canadian copper pennies from the rest of the other Canadian copper pennies?

The only way I can think of is hand-sorting... or buying them pre-sorted :)
p.s. Technically I think it's pre-80 Canadian coppers you are talking about. The "lightening" didn't begin until 1980. |

| Then there are the pre-65 (aka "young Queens"), which some consider another variety altogether. |

HAHA I knew someone was going to make the smart remark about hand sorting
Yes, I know about the young gueens too. Thats how I do the first sort, but than after that you have to look at dates
My goal is to do this in bulk, and you cant look at every date if you do bulk! |

The metallic composition is the same (or extremely close to the same) in all the Canadian coppers regardless of year, so you can't separate them out with an electromagnetic signature (which is essentially how a coin discriminator works). The only significant distinguishing feature is the weight, so you could use a scale and weigh them one by one, or you could invest a few thousand dollars in engineering a very sensitive automated device to separate them based on weight
I just buy and sell Canadian coppers by the pound. No need to worry about lights and heavies that way. The average mix seems to be 164 pennies per pound. |

| I can't add much to what natsb88 said. I hand sorted a few pounds by date, then decided it just was not worth the effort. Reverted to just keeping them all together and selling by weight. |

| The easy way to tell the light coppers, 1982-1996 is that they are not round. They have the sides cut. This makes them easy to pullout of a roll. |

So using Nate's number of 164 Canadian Coppers to the pound:
164 X 2000 lbs = 328,000 pennies = $ 3280 face. Divided by 25 a box = 131.2 $25 boxes/bags for a ton. |

Baby frog? Huh?? What idea are you talking about? There was many ideas discussed.
I simply see Canadian copper to be a better exit strategy, when the time is right. |
