picked up a box of halves today, and had an interesting encounter with someone who was ALSO there to pick up half dollars. For the longest time, I thought I was the only one grabbing halves in this area. Every bank I go to to order boxes, tellers always react as if it's the first time they've been asked about halves in years.
Anyhow, I must be way outclassed here. We talked for a bit while the tellers were getting the coins for us, and it turns out he's been doing this for 20 years. I can't imagine how much silver that's resulted in. He picked up 4 boxes, and was telling me how he always ships his clads out of state for processing. They send him a cashiers check. Seems like a good way to keep from sorting the same clads over and over. Which, as a practical upshot, could very well serve to my benefit by proxy...
At any rate, the box I got of the 5 the bank had today ended up being decent: 40% - 5 90% - 1
the box also contained an 1873 Mexican 50 centavo coin, in .9027 Ag. It's fairly worn out, so I can't comment on its value, but a neat find nonetheless.

I read this helpful hint in a book on searching for valuable coins:
Put the coins under a sheet of white tissue paper with a known silver coin beside them. Shine a light onto the paper/coins. The silver coin(s) should have a sort of glow to it/them under the white tissue paper.
Hope this helps. |

Wed night box; 19-40% 2-1964s 1 1954 franklin
Today 90% silver is worth 6.87 X face
Maybe that will flush out some of the small time silver like this. |

Anyone out there in the midwest STL area that is prone to marking halves with a purple slash, Red Slash, little black X?
Just sorted a box. You can call it a skunk unless you like collecting 50 dollars worth of marked coins. lol |

The wife and I did a few bank runs yesterday. I mentioned that we found a few 40% Kennedys. I was looking in my wallet today and saw something I forgot to add to yesterdays tally. The first bank I stopped in yesterday, the nice teller handed me a 1987 P half dollar. And in pretty good shape too I'll add. So, the 1987s are out there.
I did a drive-by today and the teller bitterly responded 'No' when I asked if they had any half dollars. I knew there was no point in being shy after that and just asked if they any CWR pennies. They did.LOL. I bought $25 worth. Not a skunk dump either. I am getting more intrigued/convinced that hitting up banks for coins is a simple way to keep peace of mind now. Whenever banks treat me as if I am an oddball, I love it. One day I won't go postal. I'll go numismatic. |

I'll try to learn how to type before my next post. It really bums up your trip when you get skinked! (But I bet it smells better!) PS - Nice pictures |

| I had to join today to share my story. I have been reading this forum for the last 8 months just never had anything to say. I have been sorting pennies but decided to try my luck at halfs for a change. I went to my normal pickup bank and got a box of $500 and was skunked. So I travel down the road to my dump bank and ask them for some halfs. The teller said she had $100 and a guy brought them in a few weeks ago. I told her "I will take them all!" I couldn't even wait until I got home, I had to take a look at one before I left the lot. The entire roll was silver!!! All $100 of halfs were a mix of '64 - '69. I got a total of $13.50 in '64s and the rest were 40%'ers. Needless to say I think I have the bug to sort halfs now! (I might want to reverse my pickup and dump banks as well) |
Running total: Halves searched:$14,445.50 90% found: 122 40% found: 481
Dimes Searched $2100 Found: 5 |

| I am in the Portland or area, and find a lot of halfs with a single black line under the neck line ---- by chance, do any of you so mark your halfs, and if so, i would be interested in coordinating to avoid fishing the same pond. |
