Regarding ordering halves, the banks in my area need to order $1000 at a time, so I try to take both boxes.

One of my banks is the same. If cash is a little tight you can always split a shipment with a friend. That is what I with one of my buddies.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available.

Very cool idea. I just went through a whole pile of 40% half rolls to figure out if there was any clad or 90% mixed in. Weighing might work to detect clad in what are supposed to be solid silver rolls. However the differance in weight you calculated might be too small to detect silver content considering wear differances. A well worn Franklin or Walker might weigh like a clad and be missed. Also you will not find rare dates by weight.

Any half newer than 2001 (as well as any 1987) is "NIFC", Not Intended For Circulation.
They go for a premium if you try to buy them from a coin shop.
I always seem to get told they're worth $.50 if you try to sell them at the same shop.
I like to hold on to them. I believe they will have collector value at some time in the future and my children or grand children will benefit from finding them when the time comes.
$380 in CWR's sorted today, I found one 1964 P. It's better than a total skunk!

I am getting my first box tonight, will report my findings.

Doesn't work like you think it would.

Weigh a roll of yr.1993 vs a roll of yr.2000,not even close. There is a lot of difference in other years also. Not to mention worn coins, coins with holes in them, short rolls, overfilled rolls.
Just bust them all open and look inside ,then you won't miss the proofs and other goodies that might be inside.

I checked my "silver" bank the past two Saturdays for more half dollars and the teller did hold back the halves that came in, but no silver.

I did go to a town 20 miles away and got $170 in halves, but I only pulled a 1967 half. Spent a whole lot more on gas just to get a 40%er.

I have a couple questions. I have been doing this awhile. I am quite certain I have 1 1987 in my "interesting clad" pile. I am seeing more and more of the post-2001's, and I wonder if they are still really NIFC. My questions: what on earth do I do with the clad proofs (s mint mark) --- they show varying degrees of circulation; all VERY good, but most not really "proof" condition; do they have a value somewhere? And are there any clad dates/marks worth saving (other than a 1974-D dd, which I don't think I could recognize) Any clad dates worth saving, and what value do the circulated proofs have? thanks.

I tried selling single clad proofs, got no bids with a $2.50 ship charge. I'm waiting until I have a roll and auction them as mixed date impaired proofs just to see what I get.

Found a bank with $37 in halves... Looked like someone elses dump bank.

$620 in CWR's today, and again with the skunkage.

$40 went toward gas. The clerk finally asked me, "Where do you get this many 50 cent pieces?"
I just told him, "I'm a collector and it's not pay day yet."
I may be responsible for a resurgence in half dollar use in my neck of the woods, he had them all out of the wrappers and in the till when I returned for change.

Oh well, tomorrow brings a whole new adventure.

Ya - but your going to need to order a $500 box or two. And I would not dump them in the same branch because then you'll never be able to order them again there. Find another bank to deposit them, then reorder. Some people here are real experts at this aboxaweek - check out the posts.

Question: where do these rolls come from? I live in the Pacific NorthWest. The rolls are all the same, regardless the bank or credit union they come from. Tan bars along the edges, and "$10 Halves" in tan letters across the middle of the paper. The bank tellers don't seem to know. The persons who order them for me gets them thru their central branch. Are these from the federal reserve, or is there some Brinks or other intermediary that collects, wraps, and redistributes?

(and although I have gone thru a very large volume of these, I have yet to get a walking liberty, or a 1970; got some other odd things; British large cent, 10 pesco, and commenoratives)

I have a question maybe someone will hopefully have and answer! I have been ordering $500 boxes of halves from my bank for about a year. Now, all of a sudden, I every box I get is a skunk. I never had that problem before....maybe once in a while I would get a skunk box, but not so many in a row. The gal at my bank says "you will probably start getting the coins back that you have already gone though, because they all go to the closest federal reserve bank, then come right back". Could I have totally gone though all the halves in this area? Is that even possible?

Alot of people mark there half dollars to know if there getting the same ones back. My guess is that it could be that you did go threw all the halves at that closest fed reserve bank

There's no way that $500/wk for one year would wipe out the federal reserve. There's got to be some other explanation. It could just be a normal dry spell. Others could be in your territory. Are you dumping into the same bank (different branch, hopefully) that you order from?

Yes, I order from 2 different banks, and dump at another one. I thought I would take a break for a few weeks and try again to see if there is any change. This is depressing!

In line with some reorganization, I'm moving this popular thread over to the Silver, Gold, and other Bullion Metals (first section, third forum down). Please continue posting about your 1/2s searching - so those of us that can't search 1/2s can continue to look on with jealousy.
