Hey Guys.
Been a member about a month now and having alot of fun with sorting copper pennies.
So far I have sacked away about $300 face in coppers.
I was wondering if some of you could share what you do when you sort.
I pull all wheats into one jar except for the few BU's that go into 2X2's.
all s mints into another jar. "Save for much future"
all 82's into another jar "deal with later"
all 1959- 1969 into another jar "Just Because"
all 1970 and 1971 into another jar. " not sure why. just for fun "
Canadians "the kids like em"
BU's into another Jar " for book fillers"
everything else into a bucket that I roll and repack back into the boxes.
What are some of the other things you guys pull and for what reasons.
Thanks
Merc49

Hi there-
good stuff! Do you use either Goop or Orange Pumice hand cleaner afterwards? Then, you're a sorter!
I keep the wheats and Canadian separate, but I don't really differentiate within the 59-81 coppers. If it's 59-81, goes in the bucket. 82's I try to deal with them as I find them. I used to keep them separate, but there were lots of times where I needed like 50 or 60 cents to make an even 5000 of copper, so I just learned to smack the 82's on the countertop and listen if they were copper or not. Most 82's are copper. Haven't had any complaints, so......

Only when they CAN'T have it, ......THEN they'll want it.
I love Cents. If you get an UNC box, you win. If you get a regular circ. box, you win. If you get a zinc box, you don't lose....so you still win. |

So far, I have $100 of U.S. Cu pennies hand sorted. I reroll the 59-81 and put them in brinks boxes labeled copper. I put the 82's in a separate pile and then after each $25 box I weigh them using a popsicle stick scale.
For the Canadians, I have four jars label, "1942-1977" "1978-1979" "1980-1981" and "1982-1996". I toss the 1997-now Canadians in a shoe box and I suppose I'll cash them in when I go to canada.
As far as the wheats I put those in a small canvas bag and plan to look through those later. |

| Thanks for the replies. Are there even very many hand sorters on the board or does everyone pretty much have one of the rydale machines? |

| I am a dedicated hand sorter. I'm still in school, so I take it slow. But this summer I hope to pick up the pace a bit. |

Even though I have a ryedale, I still have to handsort. The ryedale can only separate the zincs from non-zincs. From there, you have to handsort the remaining 15% -20% for the wheats/indians/BU/errors.
The way I look at it is that the ryedale makes handsorting more efficient. Instead of looking through $100 of mixed zincs/coppers, you can now shred $500 through a ryedale, and look through $100 of mostly pure coppers (if you choose to). I know some others just care about the copper purity and do a copper accept, and reject all the misc. copper/steel/foreign coins along with the zincs.
I only have 4 categories for now, wheats, AU/BU copper lincolns, regular coppers, foreign coins. I dont bother with the '69 - '74 S coins because I seem to have a pretty decent amount in my area anyways. |

| I have been hand sorting since mid January. Considered a Ryedale but have problems dumping my zincs so decided to keep on hand sorting. Banks here in my little town want rolled coins, no coin counters. My percentages are not too great but have managed to accumulate about 500 lbs so far. I seperate CUs, Canadians, wheats and anything that looks interesting for later. |

Yeah, the zinc disposal can be a real problem when you get one of those wonderful machines. A quarter ton is a very respectable amount by hand sorting. |

That's what I have and it took a LONG time to do. I saved everything up to 1981. I turned the 82's back in with the zinc. I started in August of 2006. Out of the 1/4 ton, I have aout 2000 wheats which is a lot seeing that over 1000 came from a single box. I wished I'd saved all the Canadian copper but most of it went back with the zinc. I'd probabaly have around 4000-5000 Canadians if I'd saved them all.
I never found an Indian. My best find was a 1909-VDB and a mint condition 1919 penny. One box contained 7 dimes.
I just save pocket finds now. 1/4 ton of pennies is a LOT.

I hand sort, banks around me have fewer copper cents and they really don't like to give up change. My goal is to do about $10 a week, and I hand sort them all.
Wheat backs I collect and put in rolls and put them by apart. I have a few rolls now. • Those older than 1940 I keep separate have about 20 of those. • Steel cents I keep separate have almost a roll, but I like to give these away as a fun for kids thing. They are worthless, but old and fun.
1959-1981 I sort out and put them in rolls, shoot for 51 or 52 in each roll. I have over $100 worth now. See I told you I am small time.
Mutilated coins I put in a jar. These came to me barely able to tell what they are. I have toyed with the idea of doing something with the copper, but I really don’t want to mess with the melt ban.
Copper Canadians I collect for rolls, but I don't have a full roll yet.
1982’s I guess. I drop them and if they sound copper, or feel them and they feel heavy, I put it with the copper ones. If not it gets sent to a bank. Not sure how well I do this, but with my copper cents I shoot for rolls of 51 or 52 to make up for mistakes.
Steel Canadians go back to the bank. Most of the counters I use will take them.

Merc49.......I'm a hand sorter in Central Florida, female, and my husband is very tolerant of this hobby--now! He wasn't quite so certain in the summer of 2008, when I began, but since I have found a few error coins, a few silver coins, quite a few wheat cents and lots of happiness, he doesn't mind now.
I pull anything interesting out and send back the rest to the same bank I got them from, but marked with my special mark on the wrapper so they don't return them to me again. I have small divider boxes that I put the 1959 - 1981 pennies into by year and mint mark so that I can pull the best from these later to make my collections. I keep all S mint marks in a separate container, as I do with all wheat cents. I have some 2x2s for the better coins or error coins I find and am still looking to see what sort of folder I want when I settle down to making my collections. For the foreign coins I have found, I just toss those into a zip baggie for now.
I am putting the coins for the "birth year coin projects" I am doing into various containers for the kids. Those unfortunately on zincers, but no control over their birth years! LOL
The main thing, to me, is the enjoyment and excitement of anticipating what treasure I might find in a roll and the sheer pleasure when I do find something interesting. I live a quiet life so it doesn't take too much to make my day.
Enjoy. |
