I was at my local bank the other day picking up a box of pennies and the young lady behind the counter asked me if I was looking for anything special. I told her that I was looking for the copper ones. She gave me this puzzled look and said, "copper?" I told her that pennies before 1982 were made out of copper and that after 1982 were made out of zinc. Again, I got that puzzled look. I guess she was in her mid to late 20's and just had no idea that pennies used to be made of copper. Have any of you had this reaction from people?

Its the opposite here. When I am asked and I tell them that I am looking for copper pennies they remark "Aren't all pennies made out of copper?" I sadly say no and pennies since 1982 are copper plated. This seems to shake their understanding of coins to the core.

Most people think of pennies and copper as a tight relationship, but now it is a shallow lie.

Thanks for the correction Mistro!

I've had the same discussion with Tellers.
If you think you confused her with that, just wait until you explain Wheats!

If you want to mess up her day even more, explain to her that some of them are 98% Canadian cents. Who woulda thunk... so many Canadian cents floating around in the USA (I get nearly a roll per week).

I stopped trying to even explain coin stuff to tellers anymore. They simply dont know much about the coins they are dealing with!

I try not to go there because some of the tellers I run into would think that the coin was made from wheat.

its amazing...or maybe not...how dim some of the tellers are.

I have a bank that has my # and the one tellers is on the lookout for halves. the drive through girl asked what years I was looking for. I said 1970 and earlier. She said ' I have a 1972'. the head teller just rolled her eyes. lol.

some ask why I want ALL the bags of pennies. I try to give as vague of an answer as possible.

or they say...do u really want 300.00 of pennies?

its fun though. some of the tellers are smoking hot and that gives me a chance to flirt with them.

My system is very simple. Since I hand sort, I only get $25 or $50 at a time, which doesn't draw any attention. I dump the zinc at a different bank that has a free coinstar service for customers, so there is no teller to explain why I am dropping off $50 in pennies. Works without a hitch so far.

Lol I cant disagree with this statement. I went on a random half dollar search by doing drive bys at 15 area banks. There were attractive tellers at probably 11 out of the 15. Too bad many had attitudes.

I am glad I am not the only one to notice this. The tellers at the banks I go to are very good looking. They like the candy I drop off each week and know me by my first name. Although under their breath they are probably saying "OH NO HERE COMES THAT PENNY NUT AGAIN".

COPPER - the "poormans" precious metal!!!

SELLING - $100.00 face copper shipped to you for $189.00 machine rolled or bagged - PM me if your interested.

Whenever a teller asks me what I want so many pennies for, I just tell them I search for wheats, S-Mints and other error coins (Double Dies, Wide AM's, etc...). I don't mention anything about pre-82 coppers just because I want to stay under the radar just in case the banks are "on the lookout" so to speak for copper hoarders.
