I've seen on different threads that many people report about a 20% sorting percentage. Although my sample size isn't that big (about 30,000 to 35,000) I'm surprised that my percentages are somewhat higher at about 30%+ (in PA). Anyway, I have a theory on the reason is for the differences and I'd like to hear your thoughts on it.
First I think that there may be as few as 5,000 to 10,000 serious sorters (at least one box a week). However, I do not believe we are equally distributed across the country. Since most serious sorters tend to lean conservative/libertarian (people on the DHS watch list ), I think its likely that we tend to be concentrated in midwest and southern states; therefore it is probable that many serious sorters are treading on each others territory. I'm sure many of you have already reached this conclusion, but what might be interesting is that sorting percentages may start to rise once we get east of Ohio and north of Virginia. Since there may be fewer serious sorters in the liberal and densely populated northeast, percentages in New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts may be as high as 40%. There might even be similar percentages in parts of the Pacific coast. My conclusion; when vacationing in these areas you might want to stop a local bank and pick up a few rolls.

In Texas, the percentage seems to be much lower than average, to support your theory on the south.
When I travel, I always try to pick up a box of pennies to take back home to search, as I don't have time to search when I travel. ( I travel a lot for work) Just a warning: Your bagage WILL be searched if you have a box of pennies in your suitcase. |

My theory is aliens. They prefer to fly over less densely populated areas. And the ships aren’t saucer or football shaped; they are the exact dimensions of a Brinks penny box.
The aliens use the copper to make ammunition for bigfoot hunting. They are no longer allowed by the galactic congress to use lead. It seams the galactic congress (who have never even visited earth) believe that the indignant life forms of earth (you and me) would mistake the lead shot for mini M&M’s and eat them.

I like chant's explanation about the aliens. Maybe it is a government conspiracy to keep us from getting too many real cents.
I have been getting around 20% in the northern CA area. Weren't you getting about the same 15% when you were in the Phoenix area Charlie?
Actually, I believe it has to do with ecomic demographics. In places where there is more commerce, new pennies are introduced at a higher rate.. diluting the percentages (unless it is new 2009 pennies.. then they never release them in my area Also, in more affluent areas there is less of a likelyhood of folks turning their pennies back in to be recirculated. In more ecomically challenged areas, and in many other areas due to the state of the economy, folks are rolling up more pennies and taking them back.. bringing the copper percentages up. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

| I know there is a lot of competition in my area of Ohio for copper and silver sorting. I make mental notes at which banks I know have a major cent searcher. I don't buy from those banks but I have started to dump a little more at one of those banks recently. I would say my copper percentage is somewhere between 20-23% |

| I'm 10 mins outside boston, a major finincial city with hundreds of banks within 10 miles and see a constant 25%-30% with 40+ wheats per box in my very small sample size. If i had the major sorting equipment some of you guys have, I could pull a few tons out of circulation around here in no time and nobody would notice. |

25-30% in Indy area. 2 large penny sorters here, I sort 5 - 10 boxes a week, and I think Horgad sorts more. No aliens have been reported here for a few months, however there were numerous reports of aliens in Indiana in 2008. Here's a link to a map of sightings, which may be used to correspond to the copper percentages and prove chant1970's theory: You must be logged in to see this link. |

About 25% to 30% here in eastern NC but I only average about 7 to 10 wheats per box. I average about 1 box per night (hand sorting) Also I live in a very rural area. I guess I just need to sort more! |

| Slick I don't really search halves but I have been through about $250 in halves in the last month and I have found 1 90% and 8 40%. All these came from the same bank brought in by the same person according to the teller. I wasn't 2 disappointed with that hunt. |

I sort just a few rolls at a time ... mainly as a relaxation hobby. Enjoyable and fun (always looking for that elusive 1914D which I'm sure is somewhere in a roll of pennies just waiting for me to pick it up). I figure that on average, each roll yields 12 - 14 pre 82s. Just a few wheats, no Indians ... but my 'quantity' is no doubt very small compared to most on this forum. Great way to kick back and relax!

I think aliens will soon be sighted in Indiana. I hear rumors they are going to have a major new penny release there in a few weeks.
20% here in Northern CA.. where neither aliens or 2009 pennies have been sighted. Guess I will just "sort more." |

I'm west of boston, but commute right into downtown everyday for work. I pickup boxes and CWR's in south boston and dorchester where the poorer communities are, and dump in Newton and Watertown. |

Probably true, I saw someone with a new Indiana Lincoln license plate coming home today. Still waiting to get the 1st 2009 Lincoln Penny design.
