I've been keeping mine in plastic containers...but i have no where near the amount you guys have..i also spent just over three days trying to roll by mint mark and year but that took crazy long
How do you guys store your coppers? How many of you roll them? Do any of you sort by Mint mark/year?
I'm just trying to figure out if it'll be worth it in the long run to sort by year as sort of a backup...Just incase the we are never able to sell by metal value maybe we can sell by the rarity of the year or mintmark? what do you guys think?

i dont have a huge hoard - only just over $100 face coppers. i roll mine back up and keep them stored in the $25 face boxes they come in. i figure it makes it easy to tell how many i have, and if and when i sell them it will make it easy to deal. ive saved some zincs also, those i dont roll, i have them in bags of 1000 stored in an ammo can.
i do not sort by mintmark or year. i save out all s-mints because out of 2500 i usually only get 6 or 8. i figure all their mintages are under a billion and they might be worth a small premium someday.
i also save out 1960 plains and d's to check for small dates, 61 and 62 plains are harder to find. also anything au/bu from the 60's that catches my eye.
i really dont see any dates with mintages of a billion or more being worth anything. but this is why im not ready for a machine. i enjoy finding those s mints and oddball coins i would otherwise miss. just my thoughts. |

I store them loose in bank boxes, about $25 face per box.

Care to elaborate for a newbie? I got (4) 1960D, (1) 1961, and (2) 1974S in the 4 rolls I bought today. Are they really worth setting aside?

Cool, thanks. Are the small/large dates easy to tell apart?

As a side note, PCGS Price Guide values are unrealistically high by about 10%.
I only have a few hundred coppers, which I keep in paper wrappers. |

Also note that for LM pennies they only give prices for Mint State 60 and higher.

Fortunately about a ton and a half of my hoard is in BU rolls. Of course there is quite a spread between the wholesale roll prices I see in the Greysheet and what I can actually get for them in Cash money (FRN's to be quickly converted back into more boxes of unsearched pennies)
I store my pennies in the canvas bank bags, $25 penny boxes and ammo cans. Recently I started using plastic kitty litter pails to store large amounts of my hoard. I picked up that great idea from another member who mentioned it on this board.

Plastic 2 liter pop bottles. Or smaller ones for wheats and "finds". Nickles also pack nicely into the bottles.
Reuse the shotgun shell wrappers to keep full rolls of copper in. Stored in Brinks cardboard boxes.

The .30 cal is perfect. It holds exactly 100 rolls of pennies. The .50 cal is nice too.. holds a lot.. but can get kind of heavy when filled.
I have started using kitty litter pails for storage and for processing after seeing that suggestion from another member here. They really hold a lot of pennies. For processing they are perfect.. one good whack on the inside corner will open any penny roll.. paper or coin condom wrapped.

This is my first post. I just joined this morning. I do enjoy reading all of your posts.
Saved my hoard in five gallon plastic water bottles initially and then changed to 5 gallon pails with lids. I like the pails with lids as they can be stacked. I fill the bottom one completely until lid can barely be put on and sealed, then put on a lid, put an empty pail on top and then start filling that one. Nickels in $100 boxes I just save as is.
Been thinking about totally going to 1 gallon milk plastic milk jugs for new additions, if I can save enough of them, as 5 gallons of metal just cannot be moved easily. I saved a couple jugs and am going to try it. Do not know if the plastic is strong enough. I do like the fact that they have handles as well. Wish they could be stacked like the 5 gallon pails tho. Thinking about trying to put four in a milk crate and stacking the crates.

If you are interested in the different varieties of different years try the coppercoins.com web site. The person that has that site says he has taken 10,000 photos of Lincoln Cents. There you can find photos of the differences in the 1960's, 1970S's, 1982's, and all the rest. There are complete photos explaining everything you ever wanted to know about Lincoln Cents.

Empty paint cans gallon size.
Buy them new at lowes for around 4.00
Each can will hold 100 rolls of cents or 90 rolls of nickels
I keep track of the #'s and when full i write amount/date toss in with a couple of desiccants seal it and move on to the next one.
I like the idea of the cat litter buckets but i dont have a cat so it would be a waste of money for me going that route + i like the idea of having a hoard i can move easy.

pre-82 ~~ Some of the cat-litter in buckets is 100% silica. WAY cheaper than buying it in packets. You can use some of the free tyvek envelopes from the post office* to house the silica if, say, you wanted to use some of the silica to help preserve dehydrated fruits and veggies.
* Not that I would advocate stealing from the post office.... But sometimes, you get done writing the address, then find it's wrong and would have to trash the envelope anyway...

You could get a cat. It could help you sort. Mine is always sticking her paws in my sorting bins and dragging out the pennies. I think she is just trying to help. Of course seems to drag pennies all over the house, and then I get in trouble for it.
You don't have to actually have a cat to get the cat litter bins.. just ask friends and family. I have had several bins donated to me. Folks are glad to get rid of them. The other reason I like the cat litter bins is for opening up rolls. One good whack on the inside corner and the coins shoot out right into the bucket. This keeps you from beating up the other furniture in the house or taking a chance of self mutilation by using a blade.
Of course, some folks just use those great Tyvek envelopes to store in units of 2500 or 5000 as beercritic suggests. But of course postal products are only supposed to be used for shipping by Priority mail. You are just preparing them for shipment, right?

Shipping pouches seem like a great idea. Sealed easy, can store alot of bags in a crate/whatever, they contain enough to be easily portable, and they are strong/durable. I am giving up on the milk jug idea and am going to try that route. We have lots of UPS, FedEx and DHL ones here at work and they give them to us for free. Cannot believe I never thought of this. Thanks for the idea!!

Thanks for the ideas guys !
I have been thinking about it alot and believe im going that route.
My grandmother and aunt both have cats so that might be a supply of buckets.
Didnt know that the litter was 100% silica that would come in very handy and save alot of money.
I was also thinking it would be good for use in the garage soaking up oil spills....
Any name brand that i should look for or is it all 100% silica ?
Thanks Again......My Fellow Investors !

Hey, this forum is all about the sharing of ideas. I have certainly gotten some great ideas through sharing with my fellow hoarders here. It's amazing what you can find for free if you just keep your eyes open.

pre-82 ~~
The brands that are silica, just list "silica" on the ingredients list. Kroger carries at least one brand (the name escapes me, right now).
Course any brand that claims a scent, you can rule out immediately, without looking for the ingredient list.
