Hello ... first time posting. Enjoy this forum!
I am going through a large quantity of Lincoln Memorial pennies I've thrown into a container for years. Saving the pre 1982 for copper hoarding (but pulling out the BU dates).
My question is ... I am finding a lot of really nice condition (BU-MS65) from 1982 to 2008 ... specially the early 80s. Is there any 'value' or 'reason' to keep the gem condition pennies from the 80s and 90s as collector items, or should I just take them to the bank and get more rolls to search for pre-82 coppers.
Thanks so much for any advice anyone cares to give

sheba, welcome. Maybe keep a few "just because", or as hole fillers. Honestly if you sort enough, you'll see plenty of those anyway. Take care and keep up the sort!

Welcome aboard sheba...
Agree with what Deal says. If they're really BU, and you are seeing enough of them, then maybe try putting date/mintmark rolls together for resale on Ebay. |

| I personally do not believe that it is worth the effort to sort out the AU/BU coins. You will not get much of a return as there are plenty of them out there, people just have to look. Yes, definately keep one/two of each date/mint to fill some books. If you have complete sets of BU then they will definately sell for more. |

| I keep the AU/BU coins i see! I hardly ever come across a nice BU lincoln cent from the 80's. Those things already sell for a high premium in roll form just check it out. I see the earlier 80s zincers to be a key down the road b.c they dont last |

Thanks all for the many helpful comments and the kind 'welcome' .... I'll keep searchin' and 'hoardin'' copper. I really like the comment someone has made somehwere on this forum ... "Pennies are the poor man's gold". Fits me to a 'T'!
I have found a lot of the early 1980s (zinc especially) that are gem BU from my 'penny pail'...but the ones I specially look over are the 1983 P and 1984 P hoping to find one of those DD coins (and 1995 when I find one)!

Wow! I guess I'd better do another search through all the 1982s I've found in my 'penny pail'. Just dumped 3 rolls of 1982s into my 'take it to the bank to be counted' jar. I don't know what to look for as to 'small' or 'large' date, but I can sure follow those neat photos with my loupe and check to see if one of these rareities might be lying around in my 'hoard'. Thanks for the info!

| if you see a large and a small enough you will be able to tell. the best way i know to explain to you is the small looks like a snowman.. the top part of the eight is smaller than the bottom. on the large date the loops on the 8 are the same |

Thanks again all ... the advice and help on this forum is just great!
I am currently getting about 25%-35% pre 1982s per bank wrapped roll from my current stops at banks. My jar that I had been throwing pennies into for years yielded, I would guess, nearer 70% pre 1982s and a lot of the pre 82s were BU (IMHO) - even a few wheats. Wish I had been a lot more diligent about throwing pennies into a jar many years ago!

WELCOME TO THE FORUM. As already noted prior to getting rid of any Lincoln cents you should check out that coppercoins web site. The guy from that web site also has 2 books out on that coin. Also, there is web site called The Lincoln Cent Resourse which also has tons of info on that coin. You should get to know of the odd ball ones since some of those bring a large cash reward. And don't forget the more recent ones like the 95 double die or the wide and close AM's in America on the 98 and 99. Watch for the 83 double die and the 84 double ear on Lincoln also. Now here is a tricky one. There is an ever increasing demand for error coins and some people are even just error coin collectors. When you flip a coin over from top to bottom, it should still be right side up. A slight reverse rotation is almost difficult to notice since when you flip a coin over in your fingers, not easy to keep straight. Occationally some coins have rotated reverses of over 9o degrees and some even 180 degrees which means the reverse is upside down. Such things are not covered in many coin books. For example in the famous Red Book, 2010 edition, on pages 400 to 407 for types of errors, not much discussed on those. This is covered on the Lincoln Cent Resouse web site though. To sum it up you have a lot of work ahead of you. |
