Happen to come across several large coffee cans full of belt buckles and one half full can of old keys. Would anyone know what is used to make belt buckles and what older keys were made of. Looks like alot of the buckles were older shoe buckles. The buckles do not stick to a magnet. They were free so I took them.

Most of the time they used plated Brass.
If it's heavier than you think it should be it could be plated Pot Metal.

There's profit if you melt things!!

Keys tend to be brass. Older belt buckles that look like brass are likely brass, because thats what they used back in those days.

I would take a couple keys and buckles and saw them in half. If yellow all the way through its safe to say its brass. If silver or some other metal, it could be pot metal, zinc, etc.

Good Luck, Robarons

Thanks for the information Robarons and Computer Jones. Kept searching and decided alot of the keys must be brass. The others must be newer keys. What are keys made of today. The buckles I will have to work on. Was told that they came from a Saddle and Boot and Shoe shop. Some of them were really rusted. Appreciate the information.
