It appears that the zinc cent will soon become worth more than its face value by its metal value alone. The zinc cent is currently at 96.32% of its face value today (5/26/06). Go to You must be logged in to see this link.

I did notice that as well. I will still be turning my zincs back in and searching for coppers until I hit around 8% coppers, then depending on metal value at the time of the zincs I'll just either keep them all or quit pennies and move on to nickels.

I have been wondering the same thing.

I'm thinking since I've already gone through the trouble of sorting them is it worth it to keep them?

My guess is that once zinc cents go over their face value allpennies will quickly leave circulation. Heck, the goverment may just start to pull them and leave a coin shortage until a plastic penny takes its place.

Either a plastic penny or no penny at all. Haven't some European countries done away with one cent coins?

I think that eventually the zincs may end up being hoarded as well.

Financial Sense Online. - "Worldwide Zinc Crisis". Zinc may soon go from $1.50 per pound to $2.00. Zinc may now be the new copper in the base metals market.

I'm telling you guys, hold on to them.

i am currently having a sore throat, a friend told me to get zinc lozenges fortified with vitamin C, and they don't need a lot of zinc to make those lozenges, because they measure them in milligrams; but zinc after all, is one useful metal
