As I was going through pennies today and I found a 1999 Wide A M. I've been glancing at the back of pennies for a long time and now it all feels worth while. Its in really good shape with a black spot on it. I just wanted to know what it could be worth, in the Redbook it is worth $500 in MS 65. Any ideas??
Thanks

Not sure how accurate this site is, but it says $900 for MS-65:

Thanks mine doesn't look that banged up but it does have a brown spot. I'm going to take it to a coin show tomorrow and see what the dealers say. I'll let you know what I find out.

I just got back from the coin show. I was told that it is indeed a 1999 wide am and that it is in About Uncirculated (AU) condition. At this grade, after looking in the Redbook, he said it was probably worth around $300!! He said I could send it in to be graded through him for $25. I think that's what I am going to do. I'll probably give him the coin sometime in the next few weeks. Is this what you guys would do??

I would get it graded if I felt that I would sell it someday. If you plan to keep it forever, then why waste the $25 for something you already know?

I hear ya there. The only ones I looked at for a long time were the 1998, 1999 and 2000 for wide AM's. Then I added 1984 DDO, 1983 DDR, and just recently started looking at 1992-D and 1992-P for close AM, and 1996-P for wide AM. It's unlikely that I missed any due to the rarity of these, but I'll never know. I can tell you that it really slows down the hand sorting looking for these 8 potential varities.

I guess I will never find one since I use a Ryedale. I have about 30,000 zincs ready to go back in the morning and that is from a slow week.

I couldn't imagine looking at all those for a rare coin.

Sometimes when Im feeling extra bored I will sort throw a coffee can of pennies for errors/varieties.

I also have a Ryedale and theres no way I could possibly get through all of the rejects.

NICE find! I've been going back and forth, unable to decide whether it's worth searching for varieties like this. How often and how much do you sort to make it worthwhile? I'm small-time, so I guess this is possible, but unlikely.

As far as I know, it is stated "In God We Trust" on the US dollar. How can I trust this currency if I do not believe in God?

I go through about 2 boxes a week(I do it to relax and mostly when my parents wont let me play on the x-box) and I have gone through about 13 boxes (I started at the end of January). I look for the 1998, 1999 and 2000 wide AM's; 1984 DDO; 1983 DDR, and the 1992-D and 1992-P for close AM. I have found 7, 2000 wide AM's, a 1983 with major die cracks, and a 1986-S proof. I think I'll start looking for the 1996 wide AM now too, I didn't realize there was one.

WOW! Lucky! Can you post some pics of what the "Wide" and "closed" AM looks like? How do you tell the difference? Do you use a 10x loupe to check each and every single? That's a lot of work! Congrats!

I cant post a pic but you can see it easily if you look at a penny from before 1992 and a penny after 1992. Before you will notice that the AM in america on the back are not quite touching. After 1992 you will notice that they are. The A after 1992 is thicker looking. I dont use a magnifying glass, I have young eyes and just look at the reverse. If I think i see something then I use my 10x loupe. It takes me about an hour to go through 1 box.

Nice one to find. I used to check everyone when I started and discovered that my old eyes couldn't handle the strain. Guess I need to sort out the dates and check later. Basically just search for the copper and check them out. Congradulations!
