Well, I'm hooked; I'm buying boxes of pennies now. I wish someone had warned me how heavy they are. I almost dropped the first one on my foot!
On to my problem. My most recent box had about 17 rolls of newly minted zincs. I'll probably keep them since they are already rolled and possibly in BU condition. Anyway, I have two questions:
1. How often does this happen?
2. How can I avoid getting these types of boxes in the future?

Only way to try to avoid getting lots of new pennies is ask for bags instead of rolls.
Yes, if the new pennies you are taking about are 09's they are going for quite the premium on ebay right now |

highroller4321 hit the nail on the head. Bags, if you can get them, are the way to go. No time wasted opening all the rolls, and you can get all kinds of goodies in them.

I checked the rolls I've opened; and they seem to be mostly 2008s. They are all shiny with few, if any, flaws. I can't check them without breaking the wrap open; as the coins are machine wrapped (without folds on either end).
Anyway, how many pennies are in a bag? $25? $50? Would most bank branches carry them? Thanks.
Thanks for the incite. |

1) It doesn't happen often enough.. especially if the new coins are selling for a significant premium. If you really want shiny new pennies, you can't get them. Once the market price of the new coins gets down to almost nothing.. then it will happen a lot more often than you might like.
2) Other than getting them in bags, which can be difficult to impossible in some areas, you can source your pennies at several different banks. You will quickly discover which banks are provided coins by coin servicers that primarily use circulated pennies and almost never have BU rolls.
I wish I could get those $50 bags, but since no banks in my area have machines, there are no bags to get. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available. |

| As said before, im sure there are plenty of people willing to pay a pretty penny(no pun intended, well maybe haha) on bank wrapped rolls on ebay. Lots of people are buying BU rolls for the years in the whitman folders to make 50 folders of BU coins and selling them for a decent profit...not a bad idea if you have the rolls, but im not sure the premium is worth the hassle. just my 2 cents (wow cant stop with the puns!) |

| Yeah, I've noticed that I am getting about 1/2 of my boxes of new, rolled, zinc. It's really cut my percentages, and I have to order say $100 at a time instead of $50 to get the same number of rolls. |

Rolls have, as a general rule, been well looked through, rerolled and taken back to banks. Those $50 bags may well have been sitting in the back of a bank vault for many, many years. I've seldom found anything of value in rolls. But in those bags, I've found a real lot of valuable coins. |
