Do you save British pennies? Or what? Is there anything in circulation in the UK that has decent instrinsic metal value?

Hi AGgressive, I'm from England and I've been saving pennies since I discovered the old ones were worth more than face value. I'm also new to this forum so hello to anyone who's reading.
The current British penny and 2 pence coins are made from copper plated steel, but prior to 1992 they were made from 97% copper. I've been saving and sorting by hand for a few months now, but I haven't made any special trips to the bank to acquire pennies (yet!). There is one benefit to the copper-plated steel pennies - they're magnetic, which makes sorting them by hand a lot easier!

Welcome to the forum from across the pond! It would be interesting when you do finally go to the bank to check to see the percentages of how many would be copper and how many might be copper plated.

Depending on where you get them from around 30% copper for 2p coins and 18-22% on 1p coins, the only benefit of the 1p coins is you find a lot more interesting find like foreign coins etc in them, I've got several euros worth of 2 and 5 euro cent coins from them and a few other foreign coins and old British farthings etc. At the moment copper coins are worth under face value I believe but if copper shoots up again they will be worth a lot more. At the moment I'm concentrating on buying up old British silver off people that have old coin collections and buying up foreign silver off the European eBay sites. But got about £800 in copper coins sat in my room

I think the pennies are pretty much equal to cents in terms of metal value right now (I wish coinflation had a section for British coins!), ie, just slightly over face, but they were well over face when copper hit it's high. I think copper will go back up sooner or later but saving pennies is just a casual thing for me. I'm mainly buying silver too - junk mostly cos it's the only affordable silver you can buy in the UK thanks to the VAT and big premiums!
I don't get too excited about finding euros cos they're made of steel too! Just think - the euro was a debased currency right from the start! Though I suppose you could argue you're gaining some face value when you find a 2 or a 5.

I don't bother with 50% silver, just pre 1920 British coins and US 90%. I'd like to buy more world coins because I expect they'd be good value but it's difficult to find the information on silver content. I've bought a few silver francs but that's all. Dimes are good value. I've bought a lot of those. I like Florins too. They're a good size and are almost exactly 1/3 of an ounce. But they're hard to come by. It's certainly a challenge trying to buy junk silver at a fair price in the UK.

Thanks. I have a small stack of British pennies and British silver myself. There is little interest in the US in foreign coins aside from bullion and colonial-era coins (Spanish coins circulated widely in the US in the 1700s). That means I can usually get them at good prices.

You may want to check out this forum post Silver of the 2oth Century.
You must be logged in to see this link.

It lists many of the European Silver coins minted.

I change with the times-
but like silver coins found in your change
I stay the same.

You don't need to know French, use freetranslation.com, and pull up a uk and French eBay page and all the menus are the same, just search for listings available to the UK "disponsible a royoume uni". Pm me if you want any tips and I'll help you.
