What's a guy to do with all of those 82s? I'm not going to put each 1982 penny one on a scale to see if its copper or not. I wish I could rent a penny sorting machine for an hour or so and go through them. Once I had them rolled I could prove they were copper by putting a roll or better yet, a $25.00 box on the scale.

if you pay shipping both ways I'll machine sort them for you.

Or just get a little putty knife and "nicK" each coin so you can see if it's copper to the core, or clad.

Here is a novel, but off-the-wall idea-
find a nice piece of ground near your house, dig a hole, then bury them!
In 4-6 months the copper cents will turn brown while the zincs will deteriorate.
The only drawback is you lose some of the zincs as they disintegrate, and the banks might reject the deteriorated zincs, but if copper 82's are your goal, plant 'em.

That's pretty smart. There's probably a chemical solution you could use to do the same thing in a couple of minutes. Something that reacts mildly with zink (so that it doesn't ruin them) but not with copper.

Another idea is maybe a mercury tank. Might not the copper cents sink to the bottom while the zincs float on the surface?

I bought a $10 scale from eBay, and I can actually sort by weight faster than I can look at the date on each one (I can weigh about one per second). It's really not that hard to put each one on a scale.

Copperhead, C'mon, try the scale.. you'll never go back. I agree with FlyingMoose.. the scale works great. It is much faster than looking at the dates. I actually use $120 scale, but my sort rate is just about the same.. about 1 second per coin. It is not exactly heavy lifting to put each coin on the scale.. heck, most of them weigh less than 3 grams.

Number one, Spend them.

If thyne 1982 confuseth thee, spend it at face value.

Number two,

I think that sorting is highly over-rated.

Unless one is going to melt them, which I have stern reservations about, then they remain pennies in the eyes of the masses.

I hate telling people this, but the melt value of Zinc has risen slightly faster than the melt value of Copper.
If copper were rising faster than Zinc, I would become interested in sorting, but Zinc is rising SLIGHTLY faster than Copper.

Get on the right side of the trend line before you spend a lot of time, effort or money sorting.

You got to be kidding. You have been here all this time and you are against sorting pennies?

Who cares what the masses (sheeple) think? They are always years behind the curve.

Maybe you better re-check the one year charts at Kitco for both copper and zinc prices. Heck, a zinc cent is not even at 100% melt value anymore (It use to be.) But even if zinc cents get back over 100% again you would still have to sort them from the copper ones.

I like your posts here Atheist, but I don't agree with this one at all. Did someone crack your password here or do you really believe this stuff?

I stand corrected.
Zinc is up less than copper on the charts at kitco.
The reverse was true for a very long time, so I assumed it was still true without checking.
For most of 2006, Zinc was slightly ahead of copper in percentage gains.

Even so, Unless you ACTUALLY melt them, the values are not differnt enough to be worth much effort.

My money is on Nickel and has been for a long time now.
I also still buy Silver.
But I do not buy gold or copper because I see Silver and especially Nickel as better bets.

btw, I commend you for disagreeing in an agreeable manner.

I got to say I'm buying more nickels myself these days. But what do you plan to do if or when the mint comes out with an alternative metal for the nickel? It may be sooner then you think and you will have to sort nickels then too.

I'm not a gold guy myself but as you may know I'm holding silver too.

Thanks for your reply.

I don't plan to sort nickels.

If the mint replaces the 75:25 nickel with anything else, I will simple stop buying nickels and hold what I have at that point.

I hope to give them to my children decades from now.
I have no desire to spend them, trade them, or even make a profit on them.
I'm only buying them for my children and maybe grandchildren.

Peace

Planting pennies in the ground is sort of dumb. Soil is so different all over the Earth that some are so NON acidic the coins would sit there forever. In other locations the soil is so acidic the entire coin would decompose regarless of it's metalic type. May as well just pour battery acid over them.
If weighing them is to much stress try the dropping test. Get a sheet of metal or just use your concrete walkway. Drop the pennies (cents) and the Coper ones will sound like a thud and the ones with Zinc will sound different. It may take a bit of listening, but there is a difference. Scratching each coin will take time and you would probably end up with numerous cuts on your fingers.
Weighing can be simplified. Take a standard 6 sided pencil. Balance a popsicle stick on it. Place a drop of glue at the balance point. Let dry. Place a 1985,6,7 etc. cent at the edge of one side of the stick. Place any 82 cent at the other end. If it drops, it's copper. If not much happens, It's Zinc. Could do massive amounts in no time and no output for a scale.
Sorting them may have another unforseen advantage. Rememer there are at least 8 different types of the 1982 cent. Of course one is a proof so the S mint would make that stand out and should not be in circulation but it does happen. The Copper-Zinc 82 Small Date is selling for about $2 and up in Uncirculated condition at coin shows. The large date, same type is now about $1.
So oddly enough some of the Zinc ones are becoming more valuable to collectors.

The sound check is the way to go. A quick flip in the air with your thumbnail is enough to tell.
