Any suggestions on how to stock up on prescription drugs? My wife takes thyroid medication and our insurance company only allows here to get a 30 day supply at a time. would really like a 6 month supply.

Try re-ordering every 24 days or so and pocket a week's worth of pills so you can build up a reserve. Even ordering every 28 days would be helpful, albeit slower. Many insurance companies don't keep track of when (and how often) you order. You can also add to her stash by claiming that the pills were lost or accidentally spilled down the drain and re-ordering more every once in a while.
Be sure to recycle your stockpile so the pills don't get too old. Also keep the pills in a sealed container if you want them to last, refridgeration may help with some medications. Most meds will last a year if properly stored. Hope this helps. |

Having a modest stockpile of thyroid or any prescription medication is a good idea, but getting too much stockpiled could be defeated if the dosage needed to be increased/decreased due to changes in thyroid levels in bloodwork, etc. Same thing for many others, i.e., blood thinning medications, etc.
We try to get our Rx every 4 weeks and occasionally I have forgotten to take a dose so that does increase the stockpile slightly but not a good idea to have that happen too often. |

I was thinking about this a few days ago as I'm on a medication at bedtime, nortriptylene (sp?), to help prevent migraines. One thing that came to mind that I'm going to ask my neurologist is if, since this medication isn't a controlled substance, can she double my prescription dosage even though I only need my current dosage so I can essentially stock up on pills? Most insurance plans that I know of cover medicines on a per-prescription basis, not on the number of pills. This might be something each of you could discuss with your doctors. I'll let you know what mine says.

You must be logged in to see this link.
You can buy drugs via the web, but there are lots of rip off sites. The above reviews the sites so you know which ones are legimate. The choices are in a nutshell:
1. Order from within the US and get the drugs quickly (next day shipping), but is expensive (for example: amoxicillin, 30X500mg, $70 including shipping (approximately 1 round of antibiotics))
You must be logged in to see this link.
2. Order internationally and get the drugs slowly and cheaper. (for example: ampicillin, 30X500mg, $39 including shipping (approximately 1 round of antibiotics equivalent to amoxicillin))

It would be pretty expensive to stock up on thyroid medicine even buying internationally, because you would be buying outside of your insurance, but it could be done.
For real cheap drugs there are countries where you can just walk into a pharmacy and tell them what you want and they will sell it to you "no problemo". Of course that requires taking a vacation somewhere... |

I wouldn't buy medicines online except through U.S.-based sites (not much risk of melamine, lead, etc.), but then you start running into problems with the feds. I'd be interested in knowing what kind of response people might get from their doctors about my suggestions above.

| I use an asthma inhaler and wanted to do the same thing since I need it or I could die (sorry kind of dramatic but true...lol) and it's impossible to tell when you're about to run out. It just happens and you dont want that during an asthma attack. Unfortunately, my prescription plan only allowed 1 month supply at a time, and wouldnt let you reorder for another 2 weeks. |
My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

| I think a lot of drugs keep a lot longer when frozen, not sure if that's bad for certain things though. |
