I've a seen number of the .5 gram mini gold Krugerrand, Maximilian and St Gaudins coins on Ebay. These coins are identified as mostly gold plated, but a few are said to be solid gold. I never believed that, so I basically stayed away from them. A few weeks ago I saw them offered at such a low price (25 cents a piece) that I picked up a couple dozen thinking I could use them to spoof burglers. When they came in the other day, I noticed that they were a little heavier than expected and that got me wondering that maybe a few might be solid gold.

Anyway, does anybody know the story behind these coins? Is there any chance that one or two out of the 25 I purchased could be solid gold? If so how could I confirm that? How much heavier would the pure gold coins be than the gold plated coins?

Well, before you get too serious, you caould start with a simple check. Measure the diameter and thickness, calculate the volume, multiply by the density of gold, and compare that to the actual reading of your scale.

If they only cost you 25¢ each, cut a couple with tin snips. Heck, I'll buy some from you for 50¢ and do it if you don't want to.

Or take one aside, do a gold acid test on the entire coin. That might tell a different story

I'm not sure how to do an acid test, but I'll try it if its relatively easy. Of course I don't have high hopes, but if one of these coins is worth $20 or $25, I'd like to know about it. I bought a digital scale on Ebay last week. I'm hoping that, if a coin has a higher gold content, it will be a bit heavier than the others. Thanks for the responses.

Just cut it! You can still sell both halves as gold, if it is gold...

Hi there-

JMO, stay away. I'll be the first to congratulate if someone scores a real gold one, but I think they're all just crap masquerading as gold.

I always love it when they say "beautiful steel HEAVILY LAYERED in REAL 24KT GOLD!!!" yuk yuk.

Only when they CAN'T have it, ......THEN they'll want it.

I love Cents. If you get an UNC box, you win. If you get a regular circ. box, you win. If you get a zinc box, you don't lose....so you still win.
