With the value of the Mexican Peso falling considerably I was thinking that buying Mexican coins for their base metal content would be a good idea. Some of their higher valued coins contain silver.

Has anybody invested in Mexican coins and are there any laws against taking coins out of Mexico?

If I were to do so, I'd only bother with the 20- and 50-centavo coins dated 1992-present (Cu 92%, Al 6%, Ni 2%). The other current denominations are steel or bimetallic.

Ditto Cerulean's advice. You can find the 20- and 50-centavos in any coin dealer's bulk world coin bin. Plus, of all the Mexican coins in common circulation, those two are the least fugly.

The "Cap and Rays" 20 Centavo is a nice looking coin. Most of the other denominations do kinda look like they came in contact with the ugly stick.

If the exchange rate is 15 pesos for every american dollar. Then each dollar would only get you 75 copper coins of the 20 centavo. You are better off sticking with good ol lincoln copper pennies as you'd get 100 of those per dollar.
