I have noticed that most everybody checks mint marks and keeps "S" mints. I understand these were minted from 1969-1976 and have also been pulling a few from my rolls. Just wondering if there is any value to these or what the motivation is to keep them??

I don't keep them separate from the other coppers. There have been "S" mintages almost every year, starting in 1909. (1909 S V.D.B. is the Holy Grail for us.) In recent history, '75 to present I think, the "S" mint mark is reserved for proof cents. Mintages generally run lower from San Francisco, and some do indeed carry a premium. It wont hurt to keep them, as you should be keeping all the coppers any way....

Live free or die. Plain and simple.
"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams |

| Yea come to think of it I do recall seeing a lot of "s" mint wheaties too. I guess since I have been separating them to date, I may as well continue doing so and stacking them up too. |

If you're going to save a San Francisco, be sure to wear a flower in you hair... (Sorry I couldn't help it) I've been tossing my S's in a separate jug for the last two or so years because they are lower mintages. Now all I have to do is find and sort them out of all my earlier jugs, a lot easerier to type out than actually do. Maybe I'll leave that task to my heirs... |

| Haha, perhaps I should have clarified my motives for keeping the "s" mints... |

I have been keeping them seperate from the rest of my Cu. I hand sort so it is easy enough. If I had a ryedale I more than likely wouldn't.

Since I am only about 40 miles from the SF mint I tend to get a little higher S mint percentage than the average hoarder here. But even here the percentage of S mints is only 5-7% of all copper cents I pull from circulation based on a sample of a couple of bags of copper cents I did a while back. If I were hand sorting I would definately keep the S mints seperate since I think they might potentially have a higher market value than generic coppers. But since I do high volume sorting by machine I just leave them in the hoard with the rest of the copper cents. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

| I also hand sort...just don't think the ryedale is worth it right now at my smaller volumes. I'm sure if I was just running the coins through the machine I wouldn't take the time to separate "s" either, but if I am looking at each date, I may as well glance at the mint too... |

| I still sort out the "S" mints (as well as other things) even though I have a Ryedale. |

| The "S" mintmark was used on the 1908-09 Indian head cents, the 1909-1955 wheat cents, and the 1968-1974 memorial cents. With the lowest mintages of the entire copper memorial type, the S-mint memorials will be the first with numismatic value. Thus I save them. They are rarer than wheats, and I've only found two rolls worth in three years. |

| The 1968 S-mint is the most rare out of the 68-74 series, i've only found three of those out of around 50K sorted. In a few decades, I think the 68'-S will be the new 1909 S vdb for the memorial series. |
