I had been calling around looking for halves. The rising price of silver is making them more scarce. After about 9 calls with no luck, I found a bank that had $540.00 cwrs. After so many calls with no luck, I didn't ask any questions, I just said I'd be right there. When I got there, the teller says...What do you do with these? I said I collect certain dates. She says..these have already been sorted through by a coin collector. After having drove 30 miles, I bought them anyway. Total skunk.

At another bank I called, they said they had some halves but they couldn't tell me how many if I wasn't a customer. I had to open an account with that bank to get $160.00 in halves. I got a free chair. I found $1400 in halves that day, but only came up with 3 forties and a proof.

One thing I have learned in this sorting business is that you have to take the good with the bad. Along with the phenomenal finds I have run across, there have been a corresponding amount of skunks.

Skunks have been the norm for me to the point where I hardly bother anymore. There are at least 5-6 others that are sorting in my area as evidenced by the different marks on the coins (black markers and red markers in different spots). I have switched back to penny boxes only.

My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

Rethink that.
You are apparently hitting others dump banks. They're not likely dumping at the same place they're picking up. Try to find where they're picking up and beat them to it.
In short, find another pickup bank.
I've been getting onesies and twosies and skunks all year until tonight, and tonight I pulled 33 90% and 7 40% out of one box surrounded by coins with black marks on them. 23 were walkers.

Are you calling smaller towns that have community banks or bigger towns that have branch banks or what?

Do you ask them to order $500 boxes for you?
Some institutions are very accommodating, especially if you let them know you won't bring them back.
I recommend buying $500 boxes from non-Brinks banks and dumping at the ones that use Brinks.
Grab any and all CWR's you can from any place that has them, that's usually when the Silver Santa says, "Howdy".

There's profit if you melt things!!

Coinhunter, there is a good chance that the halves you get aren't coming from the other sorters around you. My halves come from Birmingham and I am 200 miles south. I too get the marked halves. For a long time I only did pennies. I know we aren't supposed to say what we have, but its hard to relate if ya don't do that. I have a few wheats. I am still gonna chase the halves though. I want to get a stack thats as high as I am tall. 4 inches to go.

I really got sick of getting those marked halves. It started to tick me off pretty badly. So I haven't done them in a while. Also added to the non-half equation was the fact that my dump bank's machine ... well, sucks. I hated having to tell them that the total was $500 even, not $496.50.

I have ordered from multiple different banks and even dropped in to banks around here without notice. The ones that I do the driveby type stops give me the "here we go again" attitude and you can tell in their answer when they say they have no halves that others are out there looking. Madison is 200,000 plus people so I doubt that I am the only in town doing it.

After doing more than my share of $500 boxes with nothing in them, and even short changed to boot (pennies, dimes, nickels, quarters, tokens, etc stuck in the roll in place of the halves) it gets to be frustrating. I would love to say yes I am optimistic that one day I will strike paydirt, but so far no luck.

Yeah I have been short changed on that end too....hence my frustration and lack of enthusiasm about doing this...lol.

I also have been calling looking for CWR of halves. One bank said that had some...20+ miles away but told me they had already been searched by a regular customer. Glad I didn't drive there. I have 2 banks that can/will order for me. The first box was a skunk. THe 2nd box had 17 40% including a '69 proof and a '71 proof. So I am going to continue to order boxes as long as I can. The dump bank is across the street from my regular bank and next door to the Post Office. Not out of my way, so I have no trouble making dumps. The guy that changes the bags out of the machine even chats with me now.

Hey coinhunter, you mean Madison, Indiana by chance?

Dan, what bank is this that is giving away free chairs? That could be real handy to sit in while searching coins. I think I want to open an account there.

"But mouse, thou art not thyself alone..
in proving forsight to be vain..
The best laid schemes o' mice and men..
oft go awry..
leaving not but sorrow and pain..
for promised joy"

OK, who can name the poet?

Robert Burns's poem, To a Mouse (1785)

John Steinbeck used a line out of this poem to come up with the title "Of Mice and Men" for his 1937 book
