MISSOULA, Mont. – A couple from Oklahoma that moved to Montana's rugged mountains for a cheap place to live apparently got caught off guard by a snowstorm, with the woman freezing to death in their remote cabin.

Her common-law husband, suffering from hypothermia and starving, was found propped up against her body, with an array of weapons spread in a half circle in front of him, authorities said.

Mickey Charlene Davis, 67, had probably been dead for about two weeks when authorities reached the cabin Jan. 13, Powell County Sheriff Scott Howard said.

The man, 44-year-old Jack McWhorter, had only a few bouillon cubes in his pocket, Howard said. Their two cats and two of their three dogs were also dead.

"They'd been in there for months, and they just flat ran out of food," Howard said. "They didn't have good clothing, they didn't have any firewood cut, and no way to even start a fire."

McWhorter was evacuated by snowmobile more than 20 miles, and spent several days in a hospital. He declined to talk about the ordeal Wednesday, the Missoulian newspaper reported.

Howard said McWhorter and Davis apparently had their eye on the inexpensive 20-acre lot when they arrived sometime early last year. They had some sort of agreement with the landowner but "didn't realize what they were getting into."

"They planned to live there year-round," Howard said. "They saw an ad and thought that would be wonderful place to be, with absolutely no knowledge what a mountain snowstorm can do."

No one had seen the couple for months, until neighbors who lived three miles away asked two snowmobilers to check on them. Howard said McWhorter told the snowmobilers to call authorities because his wife was dead.

Authorities gave Davis a county burial in Deer Lodge after attempts to locate her family were unsuccessful. Her driver's license listed her hometown as Salina, Okla.

Howard said McWhorter is too emotional to talk much, but the sheriff figures things got bad starting when snowstorms hit in late November.

He found McWhorter sitting on the floor against his wife's body, with the weapons nearby.

"I don't know if he was worried about us," Howard said. "... I don't know what was going through his head."

And to think they could have walked 3 miles and got help. Just freakin tragic.

I may sound terse but stupid is a better adjective to use in this instance.

OK, for the sake of practicality, what advice can you give people who are tempted to bug out to the middle of nowhere, to keep them from ending up like this guy and his wife?

Buy a map of your area. The Farmer's Almanac. Talk to your friggin nieghbors and be friendly. Ask questions if your new to a lifestyle. Take a first aid course. The people livig where you move to KNOW how to live there, listen to em.

Life ain't like the movies, get some experiance before you go whole hog on something like that. You can never have too much food. I'd rather have 100lbs go bad then be 1 pound short in a situation like that.

What is there to learn here you either possess common sense or not? If you are going to live isolated in a place that has an average temperature below 32 degrees and snow covered 8-9 months a year the probability is high you are likely going to become snowbound and you better have 8-9 months of basic needs horded if you intend to live there year round.

Sometimes a lack of common sense could just be a lack of life experience. I know tons about living in the middle of the city and how to cope and survive, but couldn't tell you much about how to survive in the middle of nowhere. Not yet, anyway.

You mean they don't know that snow doesn't melt when its bitterly cold and can not come to the conclusion of snow accumulation?

Unfortunately, many people don't really think of consequences for their stupid actions. Case in point. Credit card debt.

I found a longer version of this article. but it seems to have disapeared. That version went on to explane about the inverview with the sheriff. The sheriff recomended that people in that area. Have a snowmobile that is upgraded every year and break a trail after each snowfall, three years worth of firewood, and a couple years worth of food. Furthermore these people were advised and reminded that they were not prepared and ignored these warnings.

Jeez that is wrong in so many ways...

I am guessing that they were at the cabin for what they thought would be a short visit when they unexpectedly got snowed in. Any higher level of stupid than that is just too mind boggling to believe.

I'm thinking that I would have aquired a taste for cat and dog in this situation.

I wonder if they even had a pair of snow shoes in their cabin.

"Rich," the Old Man said dreamily, "is not baying after what you can't have. Rich is having the time to do what you want to do. Rich is a little whiskey to drink and some food to eat and a roof over your head and a fish pole and a boat and a gun and a dollar for a box of shells. Rich is not owing any money to anybody, and not spending what you haven't got." Robert Ruark

Not for nothing, but most 67 year old women don't move into the middle of nowhere. Just like not many guys (I say many) go looking for a gal 23 years older than themselves and then think that moving into the middle of nowhere is a good idea.

I'd say there was some mental issues there.

This might stray from the thread a bit but it does tie into it.

PBS has for a few years shown a program called
"Alone in the Wilderness" about a guy who moved to Alaska and lived up there year round. He filmed his life with an 8MM camera and sent the film to his family to show how he was managing. The program showed the long hard winter that he faced up in Alaska and how he managed to survive.

While watching this program the typical viewer might think that living up in Alaska isn't all that tough, not realizing that without food, warm clothes and proper shelter the wilderness can lead to a horrible end.

**************************************
A few weeks ago in Philadelphia PA there was a sad story of a family that lost their lives in a house fire.
The cause of the fire-they put Gasoiline in a Kerosene heater.

We had a kerosene heater for many years and it never gave us any trouble nor were we in any danger from it because we showed respect and responsible care for the heater. Kerosene was the only fuel we used and we never filled the tank until the heater was off and cool.

Some people have been so separated from basic survival and common sense that the Montana story isn't too suprising.
Survival isn't about how many weapons you have, but how you can survive on the food you have set aside, the heat from a fire you have built, etc.

I change with the times-
but like silver coins found in your change
I stay the same.

I cant speak for everyone, but if I was going to move to a bug out location, I dont think I would go from a southern-ish area to a northern-ish area where it's alot colder. And then if I did make that move, I would be damm sure to research where I am going, what's around me, and to formulate a plan that would include having a stockpile of food, water, firewood, a generator, ammo, guns, medicine, toiletries, etc. It's not like it should be a surprise that winters can be brutal in a place like Montana, whether you have the life experiences or not. I agree with the poster who mentioned something about common sense. While this story is tragic, sometimes I more angry at people who dont use their brains than I do feeling sorry for them.

My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.
