The first two that come to mind are a big dog for secondary protection (backed up by my guns and ammo) and at least one cat for vermin control. Any other ideas?

Pet carry a cost of food. So a big dog eats a lot of food. And cats, their are plenty of strays looking for delicious mice.

Dog food would be just one factor in stocking up supplies, but dogs could also be fed meat from hunted animals. And I think having an indoor cat would be better for the cat's own well-being and so the cat will feel comfortable around people and their possessions (which need to be kept vermin-free).

Chickens. Geese make excelent "watchdogs" as well. Goats. Sheep.

Edit: Cracked corn comes in 50 lb bags and I think I paid 6-8 dollars the last bag I bought locally.

Dog definitely....besides the companionship, it's a great way to have an early warning system. I have a lab/shepherd mix (and two labs) who is always on alert. I get a bit freaked out whenever she starts to growl or bark. She did that the other morning at 5:50am and that got my juices going. I reached for the gun in the nightstand only to find out I still had the gun lock on (I lock it when I leave and try to remember to unlock when I get home). My adrenaline had started to kick in so it was hard to even unlock the damm thing. Just think of a situation like this where someone actually breaks in and you dont have that early warning system.

Don't rely on animals. If I wanted to do you harm, any animal you have as a "warning system" can be poisoned.

On second thought for the topic though, a ferrret might be a fun and usefull companion, if trained to hunt. I had one once, and they are very intelligent little createres, and alot of fun to boot. Use to use them for rabbits and such if I remember right.

Well Kurr, dogs are still good companions until they get poisoned --not that we want this to happen!

Two things. CoinHunter53562, you stated the number one reason NOT to have a gun lock on your guns. Dogs are excellent, and the right one can't be poisoned. My dog, a border collie, is perfect. She is not social, meaning she will bite your ass if you are not one of the family members. She's always on alert and she will not take food of any sort from anyone but me. She will not eat food thrown over a fence or even left out. If you were to toss something to her and I was present, she would look at me for approval. A simple "okay" and she'll eat it. Without it the food will rot where it lays. She is also the best pet/companion I have ever had. It took a lot of hard work on my and her part to achieve this, but it it possible. Heck, I'd rather have her with me than most people I know....

Three toed sloth

Eats tree leaves, something I don't eat so I don't have to share food.

Also;

Famously slow-moving, the sloth travels at a top speed of 0.15 mph.

Would keep trespassers occupied watching him move -

while I got the gun...

LOL! I wont lock my guns either. Forgot that. Good deal, Deal. I had a dobie like that once, but its rare to see most people with a dog trained to that level.

Hey Deal, can you post a pic of the little sweetheart?

Your post reminds me of a BBC documentary I saw a few months ago about domesticated dogs. Most of them have lost their natural behavior and would not be able to fend for themselves without human masters feeding them. (Yours may be an exception).

As for cats as pest control, you need to get one that was raised by a "mouser", aka a farm cat. A cat that was raised by a non-mouser will still know how to stalk and catch rodents, but doesn't know how to kill them. It'll end up bringing home live mice as "gifts" to you.

Here is a picture of her. I think the picture is a year or two old. She is indeed awesome. She just had her 8th birthday on Monday.

Hey Deal...beautiful dog and that's awesome that you have her trained so well.

My dogs are pretty well trained but not at that level, and if food is put in front of them they will eat it...lol. So unfortunately they could be bribed by an intruder with some tasty morsels (and therefore poisened).
