About $1000 in halves obtained from Las Vegas casinos on the strip and on Freemont St yielded a big fat nothing. I bought loose and rolled from Casino Cashers and by feeding paper into a few 1/2 slot machines then hitting "cash out". Dumped in bulk at other Casino Cashers. Conclusion - there is too much coin velocity in the casinos. There are VERY few 1/2 machines and fewer still that use coins but nearly all the blackjack tables still use 1/2s for settling bets that require a so many dollar and 50 cent payout.
I then bought up 889 in 1/2s at 3 Las Vegas bank branches - a BoA, Chase and Wells Fargo. Found 6 40%ers and while not looking for NIFC, I found a 2003 as well. Dumped $ 883 in loose at a casino on the way to the airport. |

I've seen & gotten silvers playing at the tables in vegas. I think they're still there, but it's really hard to get halves because none of the machines take them. |

I dumped pennies and nickels before picking up pennies and my first two boxes of halves this week.
Teller next to mine at dump bank knows me and asks if I want his halves. he had a few dollars loose. I saw a silver rim and he says, the tease,"I'm buying this one", a Franklin. The rest were clad...
Left without it this time. He has handed them over in the past.
Two boxes halves
Box one:
2- 40%
Box two:
1- 1964
Better luck next time!
I did get about ten buck Canadian in the last two days from the dump machine magnets plus a pile of other coins. The magnets have been fabulous the last few weeks. |

Where are these magnets usually located? Do only the coin star style machines have them or do the conveyor belt style machines have them too? |

1st BAG of halves that I ordered ($1000.00)
2 40% and a nice canvas bag.
It was so much easier to look through 2000 loose halves than to have to open all those rolls. I believe I will be ordering bags from now on.

My two boxes last week were the best that I have gotten in a while. One box was dated August 08. Generally, they are dated within a few days of when I pick them up.
The first box had 16-40%, 3-90%, a ben and a walker Second box had 10 or 12 -40%, 3-90% and a nice 2008 Proof. |

I wouldn't draw suspicion. I would ask to buy them all. |

I have mentioned magnets at my dump machines.
Around here, about 10 branches of former Commerce Bank had counters with a removable coin box that is designed to feed coins to a rotating disc sorter. The coin box pops right out and contains a magnet inside it which I clean out whenever I hit one of the now TDBANKs. The bank emplyees don't seem to notice but I am quick and use my coin jugs to block view or generally keep a low profile.
I don't know what kind of machine it is but it's designed with kids cartoon graphics on TV screens and is called "Penny" or Penny Arcade.
There are more magnets deep in the machine and I have had help from certain employees to get the mother load from these wild internal rare earth magnets. This hasn't happened in almost a year so I make do with lots of trips to the basket magnets.
The reject chute also produces coins and when jammed by a user who tries to dump tokens and large amounts of foreign coins will pack up with 100 or more coins and tokens. I keep a small homemade tool in my pocket to free the jammed coins. Like a slot machine win!
The machine asks you to check the reject chute so no problem...

$500.00 Halves.
Coin Wrap Inc. box dated 10/05/2009 (again).
(4) 40% - 65, 67, (2)68D (2) Clad Proofs - 88S, 91S
The 1965 40% half dollar was on the end of one of the rolls.
Decent box by standards in this area...still waiting for my monster box!!!
Cheers,
Jeff
***12/18/2009 Edit - Went through all the 40% coins found from boxes...noticed only one each of 1965 & 1966 in the entire group. The 1965 from this box brings the 1965 total to two!!!*** |

This bank is in the small town I live near. The Manager at this particular branch (I knew her when she started as a teller in '82) knows what I'm doing. In fact, I usually bribe the younger tellers to hide the Ag (when they even notice some) and any Silver Certificates (they call them "Blue Writing Dollars") from her with chocolate. They think saving Ag is not worth the trouble (I'm pretty sure the new Tellers don't even know what dates are Ag). They usually giggle when I'm able to show their Boss I beat her to some Ag. (It's usually a race to see who grabs the Ag first, that's why I use this branch as my main penny box buying institution.) The Manager delights in showing me the Ag she hijacks, and I don't hesitate to let her know when I spot some (usually kept for me via the chocolate connection) and get to snag it there. I'm pretty sure attention has been drawn to what I'm doing and it's kind of fun.
I keep a much lower profile at all other financial institutions. |

NO halves for me this week. Brink's didn't bring boxes of any coins to my source branch. Head teller was really mad at Brink's this week. I got some dimes at my Credit Union instead.

$1000 quarters No silver 1 Cayman Islands quarter: 1999
A belated thanks for all the congratulations on my great batch of halves last week. Just picked up this week's boxes, so we'll see what they contain.
Country, I'm located in Louisiana. It's possible my area hasn't been over-searched for halves. I've gotten some excellent boxes, but I've also gotten boxes with little or no silver and plenty of marked coins from other searchers. As far as placing a big order, it's a nice idea, but I'm having enough trouble keeping up with 4 boxes per week, so I think I'm going to have to stick to that.

I just searched a box and was skunked. I have 3 more waiting at the bank to seach this week. Seems like I am getting more skunks lately?
However, I developed a relationship with a pawn shop that calls me everytime they get silver coins in. They have sold them to me at just below melt. |
