$1329.50 Halves.

Very fun group of halves to open...the numbers weren't huge like some of the recent finds here, but they were respectable and included our first Franklin, Walking Liberty & an old commemorative!!! In the past week I began to wonder if we would ever find a Walker or Franklin...then it happened.

Breakdown:

$330.00 - 33 loose String rolls from a CWI box (date unknown).

(1) 90% - 62D Franklin
(1) NIFC - 02D

$499.50 - Coin Wrap Inc. box dated 10/5/2009 (box was short 1 half dollar).

(6) 40% - (5)67, 68D
(1) 90% - 1952 Carver/Washington Commemorative (AU-BU) (mintage of 1,106,292)
(1) Clad Proof - 72S

$500.00 - Coin Wrap Inc. box dated 10/5/2009.

(2) 40% - 67, 68D
(1) 90% - 39 Walking Liberty (mintage of 6,812,000)
(3) NIFC - 04P, 07D, 08D

Looks like your plan to grab all the halves at a bank worked better than my plan to grab all the quarters this week. Congrats!

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available.

Way to go! Persistence does pay off, especially when you search half dollars! Nice Washington/Carver too!

Just wait until you get your first dream box. Then, you'll be smiling. It's out there just waiting for you to find it.

I use to hate seeing these posts. I also had a hard time believing that this could be found. That was until the other week when I got a whole roll of 40% at a bank that had 2 rolls.

Great find. These finds keep me going. You never know when someone is going to turn in their parents or grandparents coins.

I am new to this. Sorted my first $60 worth of half dollars and found two 40% halfs, a 1968 and a 1969. Went back today to the same bank and got $100 more. Will search tonight. When I returned the $60 they had to count it by hand. is this normal? How do you return alot of half dollars convieniently?

thanks for your help... by the way I am HOOKED.

Silverguy, dont ever return your searched coins to the same bank. Take them somewhere else. Rookie mistake but you will learn.

Welcome! Like AGCoinHunter said, NEVER return coins back to where you received them from. That is sure to get you cut off altogether. The best way to return the dumps is to find a Bank/Credit Union that has an automated coin counter in their lobby and is free for members. Then set up an account with them and dump away! And again, welcome.

$100 worth of half's. first roll 3 40%, (2) 1968, (1) 1969. rest of the rolls nothing.

I also went to a second bank today and setup a savings account. They have a machine that can be used at no charge. This will be my dump bank as suggested. Thanks.

Kennedy Clad NIFC -

NIFC = Not Intended For Circulation

1987 P & D
+
ALL P & D Half Dollars post 2001 (2001 was the last year halves were minted for circulation)...2002 and forward can only be obtained from US Mint sets & rolls sold directly to collectors from the US Mint.

1970-D is a 40% Silver NIFC (only from Mint sets)

Addendum to NIFC explanation...

Unlike any silver halves you find (which of course you would always keep!!!) the decision whether or not to keep the NIFC's you find is definitely a personal one. I would personally keep any 87's you find (I have found only one). With the 2002-2009 these in my mind would really only be worth keeping if they are still in mint state. The circulated NIFC's are often just as beat up as any of the circulated coins you find from say 1971-1974. Keeping a large amount of these impaired NIFC coins can eat up your CRH capital. Also, I think any of the 2002-2009 NIFC's can be purchased from any dealer as brilliant coins in the $1.00-$1.50 range.

Went to pick up a box of Pennies and saw a '65 Half in the Teller's tray.
She sold the Half to me and didn't seem to know why I wanted the one 4th down from the top of her tray.

No Wheats in the Penny box, but:
2 '69S
11 '70S
4 '71S
1 '72S
2 '74S
and
19 young Queen 99% Canuk-A-Cents

There's profit if you melt things!!

Boxes of halves in my area are $500.00. Fifty rolls with 20 half dollars per roll ($10.00). The shape of a half box is very unlike a $25 box of cents or $100 box of nicks...half boxes here are very flat and rectangular (packed with 10 columns of 5 rolls if that makes any sense). Very long and flat boxes. The boxes I get are rolled & packed by Coin Wrap Inc.

Do half dollar boxes (in some areas of the country) ever come packed (5X5) double stacked...that is 25 rolls on the bottom and 25 rolls stacked on top so that the box would be "square"??? I think I have seen pictures of boxes like this...are Brink's boxes packed in this format??

Here is a picture by which you can compare the relative sizes. The halves box is 5x5x2 rolls, standing on end. The first nickel box stacks them on end, the second stacks them on their side. I guess all the Strings boxes (with the thin stripes on the edges) use the same method, where they have holes on the top for you to verify that all the rolls are present. The last box is an older Brinks box.

Addicting...YES

Just be sure to date-check all your halves. Some 40% halves could definitely be missed by "side-searching" the rolls. Even date-checking all the halves in a $500 box can be done in ~45 minutes...it is definitely NOT like slugging your way thru a $50 bag of cents.
