Stopped by a couple banks at lunch and found $12 in lose halves. Out of those lose halves I found 1 1964 and 4 40%. $11.75 in silver for just $1.25 face. Take that!
Sticken it to the man 50 cents at a time!

Hello All,
I went through all the posts for April 2009, up to and including my report on my $2000 of halves. I did my best and updated the online spreadsheet with all the data gleaned from all the posts. There were 2 1968-S Silver Clad finds; these I added to the Proof totals.

There were actually 3 '68S; I have edited that total. I also found a fifth '71S when I was looking through them one last time.
I did not notice it before since all five of these had, at one point, fully frosted fields, some of which has been worn away. The Red Book says that "the first 15-20 coins struck from new proof dies are also frosted, but this feature is lost as soon as the dies are repolished."
How rare is it to find frosted proofs like this?

We are finding about twice as many silver halves this month as in previous months for any given amount searched, from 1/165 to 1/90.
The silver dime rate has been holding steady since February at around 1/1650.
Silver nickel rates have been improving, from about 1/2600 for January-February to 1/2000 for March-April. |

I found an interesting document detailing someone's broad-spectrum sorting for one year at You must be logged in to see this link..
Highlights:
- One IH cent every 160,000 searched, or one IH cent every 680 wheats found
- One V Nickel in 350,000 searched, along with 26 Buffalo and 229 WN
- One 'Mercury' dime for every 19 silver Roos
- One silver quarter every 8100 searched
- For every Walker, 2 Bens, 10 90% Kennedy, 45 40% Kennedy
