I love hearing about everyone's finds. If there is a topic or a folder that has this same topic I apoligize and please send me that way. If not I'd love to hear stories of their best day ever. Either sorting, picking up rolls from bank, etc.

Thanks,
Joe

About 5 years ago, $300 (I think maybe a bit more) in CWR Halves on an out of town drive by.
About 50% of them had "Silver" written on the wrappers, some marked "OLD".
Mostly 40%'ers, but there were rolls of Bens and Walkers in that batch.
I still hold out hope for a score like that again...

How am I supposed to follow this? I could only dream of something half this good.
My best day of sorting is the day I've caught up with all the pennies I have and I have no more to sort. It's a good feeling knowing that your sorting is complete. Then its time to get a few thousand more.

There are some great Silver Santa stories here.. kind of reminds me of last December when the Silver Santa visited me. I stopped off at one of my banks on impulse 5 minutes before closing. Asked for pennies, and got a few rolls. Then I asked for half dollars, and the guy says.. "we have 6 rolls, I think they might be worth something someday" Then he opens a roll and pours out the halves.. including several Walkers and Franklins! I am thinking to myself.. those are worth something right now. Then he asks how many I want. I got 99 silver coins out of those 6 rolls.. 88 90%ers, and 11 40%ers.

But my best day sorting ever was a few months before that. I was sorting some customer wrapped rolls and found a 1912-S in VF. Then I needed a ziplock bag to ship out 2500 copper pennies I had sold on eBay (Back when they used to go for good money) so I found this medium sized ziplock bag sitting on one of my bookshelfs. It had about 30 wheat cents in it so I poured them out on my desk. I shipped off my copper deal and then went to safety dinner for work. At the safety dinner I won the drawing for the top prize, a flat screen TV. I came home.. feeling pretty lucky.. decided to take a look at those loose wheat cents on my desk. There were a few common dates.. then a couple in the teens.. then I picked up one and looked at it.. and thought.. a 1909-S.. that's a $100 coin! This really is my lucky day. Then I slowly turned it over.. not even daring to hope.. and there was the VDB!!! I had been looking at that hole in my album for 35 years! Coin is in XF condition.. much nicer than I would have bought if I was buying a coin to fill that hole. I probably paid about 3 cents for it. I have no idea where I bought that little baggie of wheat cents.. and if it had been sitting on that shelf for 3 months or 3 years.. seems I will never achieve moboman's goal of actually sorting all the coins I have.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available.

I'm not a record keeper, so it would have to be one of two days:

Day one I had $100 in my pocket. I bought two rolls of halves at one bank and side checked. No silver. At the second bank, they had 9 rolls. I bought 8 and took them to the car. Every single coin was silver. I took in one of the other rolls that I had gotten earlier and bought the rolls. I got 180 silver coins that day. There were about 20 franklins, most were 90% kennedys and the remainder of them were 40%. I looked closer at the first roll once I got it home, and it was full of MS coins from someone's collection. It had two P+D of each year from 1984 to 1988. In short I got 4-1987 coins and still wonder if there had been more in the second roll.

The second best was with halves again. I bought $200 in fed rolls. I pulled about a dozen walkers, 20 franklins and am not sure of how many 90% and 40$ kennedys. Two days later I made a 50 round trip to pick up the rest that they had. The teller would only sell me $100. It was a nice mixture as well.

getting 19 rolls full of wheat out of 40 rolls of cwr. now that bank refuses to sell me coins. saying i was costing them too much. and they do not even order coins, just take in what folks bring them.

or ,, buying 6 rolls of halves last spring. and having them all be silver. and that was when the melt was over 5.00 each.

how are you costing them too much when you're paying face value for rolls of coins? Strange.

My most surprising find was a couple years back when I liquidated a safety deposit box, that was bought together between myself, my father and my uncle. It was in New Orleans and was at an auction where all the boxes had been abandoned and left sealed for years in red tape. The auction was widely publicized in the south. My uncle told my father and I, and we went. Nobody was at the auction (less than 20 people). There was bidders that were bidding over the phone, and absentee bids were placed, and there was a $500.00 reserve on each box to cover the accrued fees from being abandoned for so many years. All boxes had been opened and were allowed to be viewed, but not touched. Anyhow long story shortened... We won a box. It during the auction had visibly at least 10 St. Gaudens & numerous smaller gold coins, along with Mr. T style gold chains and diamond pendants. The winning bid was placed by my uncle for $16.509.00, yikes! The arrangement became that I would sell it for him (and take 20%). I also got to keep whatever I wanted after my uncle took all he wanted. I wasn't greedy and took very little. Anyhow back to the original thought behind this post... In the box was numerous junk coins, anything from civil war era coins to pre65 US silver, wheat pennies, foreign crap, and tokens. Anyhow, I listed tons of gold items on eBay and all the rest of the stuff, even down to the junkiest of the coins. I even found a colonial Connecticut copper in that box, Man I wish I would have kept that one!!!!

It sold on eBay for over $1200. (The buyer informed me after he received it that it was in awesome condition and was quite rare, with less than 12 known to exist) He told me it was going to be put into a museum and that I should read the Numismatic News magazine, and I will probably read about him, and how he acquired this coin from me, blah, blah, blah.
In the last 10 seconds, it went from $200 to $1200.00

WOW!!!, I missed the boat on that one, I think I started it at $0.99, I did get 20% though so not half bad (although eBay then took they're 12% cut and it left me with only $95.00 :-(, but all in all still my greatest surprise find.

About 3 weeks ago, I was going through a $100 Brinks box of nickels, and found a 1883 no cents liberty head nickel (probably in vf condition). About 2 weeks before that, I sorted a $25 Brinks box of pennies that had 91 wheat cents in it.....that's the largest number of wheats I've ever found in a box....also, the day I found a '36d buffalo nickel while sorting my first box of nickels....

With pennies- I've had two different times that I have had CWR that had 15 rolls of solid wheats. With silver- I one time had about 40 silver halves in about 60 dollars of CWR.

I get excited when I get 3 wheats in a roll..haha. Is it just me, remember I'm brand new here, but do you often open up CWR's and discover just beatiful early 1970's BU pennies. Might just be me this week but I've opened a few rolls up that have the most beautiful 1970 and 1972 bright pennies. I've started a special box for wheats and extra nice older pennies.

I've seen it very often for random dates from the '60's on up. It's just the luck of the draw and being at the right place at the right time.
I take it as sign from the "Mighty Power What Is Cu" that I shall have good luck that day and try to push it over to the Lotto.
I quickly buy a Lotto ticket the same day I find those rolls of shiners if I'm able. (It hasn't worked yet, but I still have not given up hope!)
I especially enjoy it when a BU Wheatie shows up (but I've not gotten rolls like that ).

How many boxes..?

Was that one day or one weeks worth..?

Either way, very impressive.

Each was a single bank pickup.
I just ask for halves or pennies.
That large score was from a rural bank with dusty vaults.
There were about 5 clad halves I had to pick out - my kind of sorting!

All I can do is drool and and wish I'm at the right place at the right time sometime soon.
Nice pic, and again Mighty Fine.
If all I had to do is pick out a few clad ...
May you score as well again (and again)!!!!
