Ok folks, I'd like to know what the oldest coin you've ever found "in the wild" is. Mine is a 1912 wheat cent (unfortunately in very poor condition).

I got a 1909 vdb in my 4th box. I'm on the PA/DE border, and the ten or so boxes I've sorted through seem to yield higher percentages of wheats and copper than the averages posted here. Beginner's luck I think.

Welcome to the club, Charlie! I found an 1887 IH a few months ago, the same week I found a 1909 VDB.

Oh yeah, well, I'm gonna take a rock and heat it up to a few thousand degrees like it was before the Earth cooled and then I'LL have the oldest coin.

What's the melt value of molten lava?

In a $50 bag of pennies, I found a bronze coin from the 2nd Bar Kochba Rebellion of the Jews against the Romans (135 AD). I'd like to find something older, but don't expect to.

found an 1858 eagle earlier in the year, other than that I found a 1909 vdb about a few months later. Both were fairly heavily circulated, but both sides were legible.

1859 Indian is still my oldest found in the wild. When I first saw it reverse side up in my zinc tray I thought it was a Canadian. As I picked it up I realized what the wreath represented, and the fact that there was no shield.. I knew the date even before I flipped it over. What a charge!

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Well when you have sorted 1/2 of the copper out of circulation you were bound to get lucky eventually.

Do you think we should start a thread on who is using the oldest machine to sort, count or wrap?
Kudos on that 1859 Feathered Liberty!
The way you wrote it up, I almost felt the shivering thrill of discovery tingling my spine.

I might have a shot at some of those oldest machine records. My wrapping machines are not all that old, but I have a pretty old sorter/counter.. a Downey Johnson.. built like a tank.. I don't use it much anymore though. I even have an old penny scale.. I think it is from the 20's.. great for weighing copper pennies.
