So now that gas is cheap enough I have devised a scheme; on a future trip to Delaware ( the closest state with a deposit law) I am planning on taking a Bunch of bottles and return them for the deposit. I read that you can return up to 120 bottles to any one retailer and they give you 4 cents each.
(roughly 300 mile round trip @ 30 miles to the Gallon = 10 Gallons)
That is $20 in gas roughly 500 bottles. I think I can fit them in the trunk of the car?
Keep in mind that I am not just going for the bottles. I am already going there.
Any idea the restictions with redeming the bottles? I know they won't take more than 120 at any one place. But anything else i should know?

| that would be illegal unless you bought them in the state that you are cashing them in. when you buy the bottles you have to pay the deposit and when you recycle them you get the deposit back. it is to promote recycling. to do what you plan to do would be illegal. if they see your plate they will automatically know. you probably wont get caught, but it boils down to your decision. |

Yes, it is illegal to return cans to other states. Like he said you mmost likely wont get caught. If it was legal everyone would be driving to Michigan where you get 10 cents a can |

It would be illegal. Many cans and bottles will have printed on them what states they are sold in and can be redeemed for redemption value.. sometimes those containers are sold in neighboring states.. but if you didn't pay a deposit you should not be asking for one to be given to you.
Most recycling centers in CA will ask for your identification. If you are from out of state they most likely would refuse to buy your cans and bottles.
Besides, how much is your time worth? If you can only get $4.80 from each location it is kind of like sorting out copper pennies which currently melt for about $51.50 per bag.. but not nearly as much fun. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available. |

Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time, don't do it! Keep your eye on the sparrow, when the going gets narrow, don't do it!
I really liked the opening credit sequence when Baretta fixed his bike with a rock. |

| Michigan loses millions of dollars a year from out of state containers. They are currently trying to expand the container law to include water and juice and at the same time pass a law that all cans sold in michigan ne specially marked as well retrofitting all can machines to be able to read the new technology. |

Make note of $25 million per year of bottle deposits that go unclaimed. Even if that is off by a factor of 10, a person could make a nice, small side hobby collecting cans and bottles in CT. |
