I have a friend (and also client for computer work) that is a bona fide materials engineer and has done a lot with metals. He is familiar with aqua regia and such, however, he is concerned with making big bucks due to his overhead and is not very enthusiastic about my idea of gathering scrap and refining gold out of it.
Separately, today I picked up a bunch of old ISA, VL-Bus (remember those?) cards plus some of the ceramic style Pentium I and a few 486s as well.
I know these have more than trace amounts of gold on them, is anyone here doing their own refining? I don't like the idea of being exposed to caustic chemicals and SWMBO has asthma.

| I should add, I am trying to decide whether to keep them or just sell them off to someone who already does this. |

ShortJohnSilver, welcome and great name. While I'm not a scrap gold refiner, there are a few on here that do it. Maybe one of them will chime in here and help you out. Good luck and welcome!

| I do lots with computer equipment and find it easier, faster, and safer to sell it for the gold content as well as other valuables. If you are able to accumalate large amounts you can get some good prices on evertyhing from monitors, plastic, batteries, harddrives, circuit boards, and the list goes on and on. Lots of buyers lined up to buy as well. Last week we sent out 26 pallets of computer equipment. |

Hi There SJS,
I strongly suggest you speak with your friend who, "is familiar with aqua regia and such", to see if he is interested in your endeavors. If he has space and materials, I'll start sending you my old 286&386 processors, ISA cards and MB's with heavy gold plating. (Or at least just the gold plated fingers and sockets.)
You must be logged in to see this link. It's a great site; register read, read again and download the info you'll refer to frequently. I was really proud of my first gold button (I still don't know how pure it is, but I'm pretty sure it's Au.) Space to work and time to do things properly are what I've had the hardest time finding. Welcome and best of luck! |

| We have a client that recycles electronics on a large scale by demanufacturing and recovering not only the PM but plastic, steel, grass etc. I heard that another company is finding it cheaper just to ship all the electronics in bulk to a smelter in Quebec. This can big business, requiring a variety of equipment and markets for various end products, but from what I've heard, the major barrier to entry seems to be tapping into a reliable supply of junk. I can't comment on small scale recovery efforts. |

My mistake, I have Symantic Antivirus, and since the company provides it, I use what they give me. |
