OK so I am new at this and I was wondering do the brinks penny rolls come wrapped in plastic? Do you want to stay away from plastic wrapped coins and stick to paper wrap or does it matter? I hope my question makes sense?

Welcome to the forum nwahsm. Yes, the Brinks penny rolls are the ones wrapped in plastic. Some folks say to stay away from them because they have gotten skunked on some Brinks boxes. But it varies by your area and can even vary from one week to another. Best way is to get a good sized sample and check out what your copper percentages are. I personally have had very good luck with Brinks boxes. An easy way to check out a Brinks Box to see if it is a dud without even opening it is to put it on a scale. A solid box of Zincs in Brinks wrap will weigh about 14.06 pounds. You can check individual rolls with a smaller scale.. a zinc roll will weigh approximately 126 grams. Any weights higher than this and you have found some copper. Good luck on your sorting and let us know what your percentages are coming up at. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Based on your location I would guess you got the Brinks wrapped rolls either from Bank of America or Wells Fargo.
Standard copper percentage for your area is about 20%. |

| There are a lot of us sorters in CA. Are you in the northern half or the southern half? |

| The Bank tellers at the banks I have been going to give me weird looks and tell me I'm the only person asking for pennies in bulk. |

Wait till you see the looks they give you when you try to turn back in the zincs in bulk.
The good news is you won't be getting any of my dumps.. I am in Northern CA. When you get on good terms with some of the tellers you can give them your phone # and have them call you whenever somebody turns in a bunch of rolls. They will love you for picking them all up so they don't have to ship them. |

one nice thing of the plastic. i had 5 rolls in the cwr's, that were all 2007. each had 1-2 ''colored'' coins that i could see. instead of passing them by as being ALL new coins.
as i mentioned before. i opened up a dozen rolls that appeared to be new 2008..... but were only that by chance on the end coins.
so these guys selling 2008 boxes., i queston what is really in them. |

Cwgii- I sell them. I check about half the showing dates in the box and if they're all the same, I sell them. I have to slightly pull the roll end to see the date or else I would check all of them. Also, of course, every cent on every end of every roll has to be brand new. I also semi disclaim "every reason to believe.." just in case, but I do really believe what I've got is solid 2008's. What other thing could possibly be done without opening? BTW: no offense taken, just explaining my rationale.

I sell them too. The other thing you can do besides checking the end coins and cracking several random rolls is to check them on the scale. If they contain any colored coins chances are that some of them will be copper so the the weight will be a little heavy. I always verify weight on any boxes I ship out. |

just wish i had not taken the two boxes i have had, back to the bank..
i saw one ebay sale that was pretty iffy..... the inspection date was like sept 15, 2008. so the guy was selling them as '2008 coins'.
i went a bit overboard when i got to tucson. after the drought of havasu. so i still have 600$ to sort. then i will give up on the pennies.
after all, i cannot carry them, and have not been able to sell any locally., craigslist has not been kind to my sales so far. |

I picked up two boxes this week like that. They had a CWI inspector #4844 and stamped October 17 2008. Many of the rolls had shiny 2008 zincs showing through the swiss cheese holes. Sure enough, the 2008 zinc end rolls have mainly 2008 coins and a few copper ones and brown zincs. Found a few Canadians and wheats in them so far too. I hypothesize that the wrapping facility has a bunch of 2008 rolls from other sources and need to re-wrap them in the String paper to get them out there. These 2008 pennies are almost scratch-free. The CWI facility wraps coins it gets in I believe. I don't think they get new coins from the Fed or do they? I'd love to be able to trace where the coins are sourced for the banks in my area.
