Ok, so I'm in the process of hand sorting a $25 Brinks box from my bank right now. I just came across one of the oddest pennies I've seen so far. It's a 1969d that is silver in color, like a nickel or a dime. It also appears to be slightly thicker than a "regular" penny of this same type/year. does anyone have any idea what this is?? Is it rare or valuable?? When I first saw it in the plastic roll, I thought it was a nickel (this box has already yielded one slightly off center 1996d dime). EDIT: Digital scale weight is 3.2 grams.
I've found a mercury dipped penny recently and someone else here did too. All of them seem to be from the 60s. I suggest you don't handle it. The silvery color is not the 'white' of silver, but more of a shiny nickely kind of color.
mine was a 1944 - so I thought it was a rare steel '44 penny (it wasn't). Someone later posted a youtube clip they found about "how to" coat your pennies with mercury. I kept the penny, but now it is bagged and tagged. While I can't say for certain if its mercury, I'll play it safe and won't be handling it anymore.
