For those of you who frequntly buy from the Mint, here's the scoop:

Fractional gold and platinum bullion, coin and die sets, state quarter first day covers, and collectible spoons are getting the axe. The impetus is low demand for these items, and increased pressure on the Mint to simplify its catalog (and thus overhead costs).

Watch for any discounted bargains in their upcoming shelf clearing sale.

I could maybe understand the rest, but fractional gold and platinum bullion?!!!! Last I heard the mint couldn't keep up with demand for them.

As I read it, they are only discontinuing "numismatistic" fractional gold and platinum coinage. These are the coins sold as "proof" and "uncirculated" by the mint. The regular "bullion grade" fractionals should continue to be avalible.

Yeah.. almost like the commemorative half programs of the 30's.
