Is anybody else finding halves with black dots on them? I have been getting them on a fairly regular basis with CWI boxes. Have not seen one yet in a Brinks box.
They look like this,

They look like a sorter is marking them, but the quantity he/she would have to do to have them show up in almost every CWI box I buy seems improbable.

Yes I see black marks like that, red marks, marker marks on the edges. It was put there by someone doing the same thing you are doing...coin roll searching. |
My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

I get lately some halves with an 'XB' punched into them. Some others have both a black dot and red dot, like from a small dab of nail polish. Others are sorting this goes to show. Also, I meet many tellers who keep any silver halves they see across their desks. One told me today she opens any rolls that come into their bank. BTW, I ordered a few boxes this past week. Got two 1967 and a 1964. Alot of work to find these few. With the cost of gasoline and time spent getting the money to buy the coins and dumping the loose coins into the counters, I can see people getting discouraged when they order boxes. The joy is in hope that you will get that one box that makes the skunk periods all worth the while going through the motions with. I treat this as a hobby. My wife is getting bummed though. She kinda expects no skunks. I say bring them on. This is a law of averages game. |

Jerry, read about my last two boxes here; the good ones I get one about every 3- 4 months - You must be logged in to see this link. Be patient, try a pickup at a different bank, don't give up yet.
BTW: ON thread, I've had black, red, and blue dots and plenty of each. I also had a box of 100% UNC 2004s (or was it 05s?) |

I haven't seen any other markings(yet). Just the black dots. I don't know how big the circulation pool is, but somebody is sorting a lot of halves if these black dots are from 1 individual.
How could it be that only CWI is wrapping them...
It maybe could explain why I haven't found Ag in a CWI box since summer.

I too have found a few black dots. They came from Bank of America with the Fed Reserve out of STL or so the teller tells me. the dots are alway over the ear. if you look closely though it is not a dot but a black marker shape. from far away it looks round though. Found about 10 in my last box. |

Along with various colors of dots marking Halves, I also see a lot with three or four lines on the face usually at a 45 degree angle from Kennedy's face. Seems like a lot of work to mark individual coins. I just mark the wrappers so I don't re-buy my dumped rolls. |

I'd say it was someone marking their dump boxes, after they've gone through them |

Thank you very much! Please PM me when and where you dump them.
I have Silver coins either marked or patinated with most of the colors of the rainbow as well as some colors that are just plain weird. I kind of like the green spots that show up on some of the poorly stored Halves. Sometimes I want to play "connect the dots" and see if the subway map of NYC magically appears. If they aren't slicks, a soak the coin in rubbing alcohol, or paint thinner if I really want the "applied color" removed. It works rather well. |

I am starting to find black dots in Kennedy's ear in the most recent boxes. I am sorting in the Erie PA area. The last few boxes have the same box but the wrappers are different than the ones that were yeilding several per box. |

Found some halves today with the black mark on the ear. I am a good three states away from you killerken53. Weird part is most boxes I search have at best mild indications of other sorters out there. This box today had the black mark as the only signs of a sorter and it was on perhaps a dozen coins. I guess they missed some as I pulled a Franklin and four 40% out of today's box, lol. One can only guess that the coins we dump end up at the CWI places and get sent out in all different directions? |

Out of curiosity, I marked a double handful of rejects with "K" in the center of JFK's face (black sharpie). I would be interested to hear if anyone finds them. |

I've not seen "K's" yet, but will keep an eye out for them. One of the more curious marked Halves I've seen (aside from the holes drilled in Kennedy's head that holds a .22) are red Christian crosses painted with nail polish in the obverse and reverse of the same coin. Back in the '70's there was a tavern called the "Red Spot" that used to paint all the Halves they turned in to the bank fire engine red. If you found one and brought it in you could get a free schooner if you used the red Half to buy any bar food. I was once told by a teller that some of the older vending machines used to put the 4 evenly spaced black lines on the obverse that seem to turn up in just about every box I sort. I've even found that marking on Bens, as well as '64's and 40%'ers. |
