I just got halfay through my first $25.00 box of pennies. I am averaging about 12 coppers per roll - 1982s are not included in this count, and actually the few wheats I found are not included in that number, so I guess I probably average at least 13 per roll (I have kept track of each roll, but that's at home and I'm here goofing off at work).
I also have my old coin collector books in front of me and have filled them in nicely - still missing those darn S mints! In fact, I may get another book or two so my kids (grandkids?) will have completed books too.
My big question is... do you look for errors? I have never been that good at being able to distinguish errors, close or wide AMs, and double dies unless they are extremely obvious. Should I hone these skill now that I have all these coins in front of me?
Anyone here have much luck looking for errors? Is it worth it? What are your thoughts?
Any good links for pics of errors?
so for the run-on, it's my first post... been lurking, but just joined.

Welcome to the forum. Yes, I do look for errors...
1983 double die 1984 double die ear lobe 1998 Wide America reverse 1999 Wide America reverse 2000 Wide America reverse
There are others but I dont look for them since it would take forever.

I look for copper '83s, doubling, off center strikes and blanks. A member here recently found a double die and sold it on ebay for over $200!
Are you throwing that out? |

I've been setting aside: 1998, 1999, 2000 - looking for Wide AM 1992 - looking for Close AM
I think I will start looking for: 1983 - Doubled Die Reverse
As for other errors such as off-center minting and whatnot, if it's not readily seen while sorting, I don't look any closer.
For images, I'd go to my friend google and search for variations of "1998 wide am difference picture" and so on.

I have found a couple of CUD's, 1960 dbl D and 1970s small date. The CUD's stand out and sell well the rest I need to use a microscope.

I don't look for errors. Everytime I thought a had a deal I was offered 2-3 cents for it. I don't waist my time.

I look for all known errors since I first started out as a collector of errors and found my way into hoarding coppers. I am the one that sold a 1983 double die reverse for $235.95 on ebay. I have a few wide am's and I am looking at the weight of all my 83's for a copper one that weighs 3.1 grams. in 84 there is a doubled ear on the obverse which in good shape good get a few bucks but not worth much in very circulated condition, as with all errors really. I would say that the only error coins that would still be worth quite a bit in very circulated condition would probably be the 1955 double die and the 1969 s double die which would both bring in enough for a Ryedale machine or more. Blanks don't come too offen in CWR's being that they are too obvious to the one rolling up their spare change. If you want to start looking for errors you might want to get a nice magnifying glass or loupe and possibly a lamp with a magnifying glass in it for those that have bad eyesight. I would suggest the REDBOOK for good info on errors and research on ebay or check out lincolncentresource.com or maybe coppercoins.com for info on errors. Remember that some are so hard to see and if you do find one you will need a good camera for pictures, and steady hands.
