Hello all! I've been watching the forums here for some time and really enjoy the information. This is my first post and I want to get active in my hoarding. As an American based in the UK it is quite frustrating as everyone is talking about US coinage! Does anyone know if there are any coins worth hoarding in the UK and what their metal values are?
Would appreciate some pointers to get me going.

Thanks all!

Welcome to the site and enjoy yourself in your searching.

Can't help you as to what to save in the UK, though.

well with the price of copper as it is 1pence and 2pence coins are worth about face vale for those minted before 1992. I'm hoarding them atm and waiting for a rise in copper prices as we saw last year, I think either way they are worth holding as if economy collapses they retain their metal value, otherwise you still have coins worth face value. You can sort with a magnet as post 1991 coins are steel plates with copper so stick to a magnet, so anything that doesn't stick, keep. Drop me a message for more info. Where in the UK are you?

Welcome Coinvestor - neat nickname! I'm not in the US either, so I feel your frustration.

I was going to suggest you dialog with Somnophore since we just converted him, but I see he chimed in already. Our member Cerulean (top of page, members, select "C") has a spreadsheet that calculates the coinflation style of UK coin. I don't need it, but he as offered to share with anyone who is interested. Just private message or email him and I think he will send you a copy.

You will be amused to notice that a couple days ago I changed the description of the Copper Forum to include UK coins :)

I did notice the mention on UK coins there! Thanks for the welcome. Somnophore has already come in with some great advice to get me going and I've pm'd Cerulean for the spreadsheet. Had a good hit rate yesterday - got over 39% coppers in my first batch of £6 worth of 2p coins. I did get them from an amusement park though so they must have a wealth of them there that keep recirculating! Think I'll visit them again today.
Now I just need to get my wife to understand my new hobby....she thinks I'm nuts...

everyone thinks I'm crazy but I enjoy it, and I look at it like speculation, I'm hoping copper goes up again. I'm sorting while percentages are high. Plus if it tanks long term it's a handy way for me to save cash that I can't spend without some hassle. Lol if I have a jar full of £1s they get spent when I'm skint. I'm not going to go out drinking with 10kilos of copper.

uk silver coins pre 1920 are .925 silver
coins 1920-1947 .500 silver

don't know if that helps you very much but it didn't look like there were too many other replys

if you were to buy a spink coin book it will tell you weights of all british coins and composition you can probably pick one up on ebay say 2005/2006 for about £5.00 if its mainly compositions you're after it doesn't need to be too up to date(dates covered in books roman-to modern
everything groats, angels allsorts its quite interesting as i used to collect george iii silver halfcrowns but moved on to silver art bars anyway best of luck!!!

Are there many older coins with silver content in circulation in the UK?

no they aren't legal tender so don't circulate in the UK, I once got a silver sixpence instead of a 5p once but that was just a one off fluke. You can pick up silver coins at yard/boot sales here because a lot of people don't know what they are worth.
I sort for copper 1p and 2p coins, you get around 33% from 2ps and 25% from 1ps, I only do 1ps because you often get random oddities in the bags, such as US pennies, various foreign or old British coins (farthings etc) and 5cent coins from euro nations, I save these as thy are worth 3-4p dependent on current exchange rate, then either spend if I go on hol, or sell to someone who is going to Europe

Somnophore, what do people do with the older pre-1971 (I think) pre-decimalized coins? If they arent legal tender do they scrap them? throw them away? make crafts out of them?

Thanks

think the government scrapped a load when they were exchanged for new money, some are sat in coin collections as they aren't worth much, most of the older silver coins are held by collectors, the stud you find coming up is 1920-1947 50% silver mixed in with 1947-71 coins coming up at yard sales etc as people don't k ow they have silver

Really glad to see you are seeing the oddities because that makes the hobby way more fun :) I get a few euros (2 cent most often as they are penny sized) and have accumulated a nice bag of UK pennies, and 5 pence (found with our dimes).
