I was messing around on ebay today and decided to click on the coin section. Seen a think for Copper Bars. Where does one get that much copper to melt down and make into bars? They look cool. Probably not worth the money they want but a cool piece to have.
I know it is illegal to melt down penny's but who's to say some of those bars are not made from pennies? Once it is done there is no way to prove anything. right?

Most of those are pure copper electrical bus bars that have been cut, stamped and polished. Pennies are just one small use for copper, and given that the bars are pure copper, and pennies are 95% copper, I doubt that any of them are made from pennies.
Yes the bars look cool. I own a few small ones myself. The price per pound is obviously way over "spot" so you are really getting a novelty item rather then a real investment. In addition to eBay, you should check out You must be logged in to see this link. which is run by Nate/natsb88, one of our members. He has grouped many of the copper products together in one handy site. Ask him if he is still running a Realcent member's discount. |

That can not be emphasized enough. You get a lung full of concentrated Zn fumes and rest assured, you are heading for the hospital. If you're lucky you will walk out the next day, sick as a dog for the rest of the week. Zinc fever can kill.

Bluegill,
If Zinc fever can kill, what does copper fever do?

Don't get me wrong I don't know the first thing about melting anything but icecream I was just asking what is stopping a lot of the copper penny horders from melting down to copper bars that do not resemble pennies to be sold at the scrap yards.

Honor. Integrity. The law says not to.
Edit: In addition it can be explained that many on here are not just going for the metal but the numismatic play as well. When the ban is lifted and commercial interests become involved then most of the copper coins will be in those bars. The ones left will skyrocket in value.
Plus as they are in coin form, they are guaranteed by the u.s. government as being a known weight and purity. If you melt it down you have a bar or blob of something of questionable purity and needs to be assayed to attain the proper purity garantee. |
