Report from Austin -- 1150 cents 189 Cu --> 16.4%
For some reason, I seem to be getting only 1/2 to 2/3 the yield that most of you seem to get. MaDeuce |

2,500 cents 0 Cu 2,500 Zn (all were 2007 issue)
Lesson learned -- open the box and peek inside before leaving the bank. However, it was the fastest 2,500 coins I've ever sorted. |

I have an old bowl of pennies from my grandfather that was probably used in the mid-90s. I am getting about what you guys are kidding- in the 20% range. copper has risen so fast and nobody pays attention so I wouldn't be surprised if the % stays the same for awhile. there are billions of pennies out there. |

What is the law in Canada concerning melting Canadian Nickels?
Also, is your long term running average about 23% ?
Thanks!

I just received my Ryedale coin sorter a couple of days ago ( You must be logged in to see this link. )
I finally got over to the bank and picked up a $50 bag today and started sorting. It's planting season for onions so I didn't have a lot of time to mess with it today (4000 onion sets to get in the ground!) but I got through about 3500 coins in about 20 minutes during a break.... with 760 coppers... so running a bit over 20% on that bag. The main time and difficulty is in opening the tightly rolled rolls and getting the coins out. Loose coin bags would go a lot faster. On the sorter you just toss handfuls into the hopper and they come out two chutes at the bottom. Seems to be pretty accurate. I only found one sort error in the first 500 coins... so about a 0.2% error rate based on that insufficient statistical sample.
The machine is awesome! I'm thinking of taking it to coin shows. I experienced two jams in that 3500 coin run. One was due to a piece of roll paper that went down and jammed the feed chute, the other was simply two coins trying to fit in the chute at the same time... not sure why. Jams are pretty easy to clear.... but you don't want to walk away from the machine while it's running... you need to turn it off when it jams.

2,500 cents from bank, hand wrapped 460 Cu cents 18.4% yield
I did this run with my spankin' new Rydale sorter that came in yesterday. I had a few hiccups with it for a short while, but it was sorting away wonderfully before too long. This thing smokes (not literally) and works incredibly well. This is all without even getting on the phone with the manufacturer. Andy has provided superb and immediate support by email so far. He has done a wonderful job on this, and I can't recommend it enough. It is getting ready to digest some large quantities of coin very soon; I'll check back in later with an update.

The paint cans sound like a good storage method.. but I guess I am too cheap at $4.50 a can. It could get really expensive if you had a good sized "BASE METALS hoard" like I do. I use several storage methods.. some cheaper than others. It's always good to share ideas. I am kind of partial to those 32 Gallon tubs with lids. They are about $5-6 and they hold alot. You want to place them where you want them before filling as they are kinda heavy when full. For smaller quantities I like the cloth bank bags and ammo cans. You can sometimes get the bank bags for free from your bank if they really like you, or you can buy them from a banking supply house for much less than the paint cans. The ammo cans come in 30 calibre and 50 calibre size. The 30 cal. size holds 100 rolls (1 bag) perfectly. They can generally be bought at surplus stores when they are on sale for about $3 each. The cheapest storage method is those tyvek bags the post office has for priority mail. Hey, you are just getting them ready for shipping as soon as the market develops, right? The post office also has some really sturdy tubs that will hold a lot of pennies. As I stated before, post office supplies are only supposed to be used to facilitate your postal shipments. You wouldn't want the postal police to discover a room full of those tubs and go postal on you. Amazing how many of those tubs just disappear.. kinda like all those pennies and nickels the mint is chunking out.

Today's report from Austin
Six (6) $25 boxes of US one cent coins
Box 1 -- 414 copper -> 16% Box 2 -- 450 copper -> 18% Box 3 -- 455 copper -> 18% Box 4 -- 369 copper -> 14.7% Box 5 -- 359 copper -> 14.3% Box 6 -- 375 copper -> 15%
I'm gettin' the hang of the new sorter. The last box took 8 minutes 5 seconds, which is an average of 312 coins per minute. Not bad at all. Will have to spend some of that time I saved over manually counting to down a few Turbo Dogs.

Im trying to reach a set amount and think i can get away with no more than 10 of the gal size cans. 6 copper 4 nickel I found that the cans will hold 100 rolls of nickels with some space left and im hopeing that i can get 100 rolls of cents in each can it will be close....
Anyway that will be 800.00 in nickels and 300.00 in cents. Also investing in ammo, silver, palladium, ammo, gold, platinum, ammo, 1 year stock of food and other necessities, ammo, fuel and other items as well as trying my best for a debt free life. I would luv to have a truck-load of cents and a truck-load of nickels but those FRN's only go so far.

Ridewithme38,
I have not done an extensive analysis of the error rate, as doing so would require me to manually sort through all of the coins, including rejects, and I'm not doing that anymore! However, I can give you some information about what I have seen.
Errors are few, and seem to be false rejections rather than false acceptance. In other words, I've seen a couple of copper cents that were rejected as zinc. I've seen these more by accident as they've been coming out of the chute, as I've not been sorting rejects.
As to the coins that it identifies as copper, I run have been running them through the machine again for fun. I have also been manually going through the coins identified as copper. So far, I've found about 6 Zn coins out of 2,422. They've all been found by the machine on the second pass. I'm very happy with the accuracy. It's entirely possible that the Zn coins ended up in the Cu bucket through accident on my part, so, at this point, I'm not willing to state unequivocally that the machine was responsible for the mis-sort.
I think there are some more sophisticated methods that Rydale can suggest, but this is fine for my purposes.
I'm happy to share my experiences in more detail if there's interest. The moderators may wish to push this off to its own topic.
Best Regards, MaDeuce |

MaDeuce,
Looks like you are getting your money's worth out of that new machine. I appreciate your reports. Very impressive sort time on that last box! Does that include taking them out of the wrappers or did you prep them before the run by removing all the paper first? I gotta get me one of those toys. Any theories on why your sort percentages seem to be running consistanly lower than the rest of us? I guess with this new machine you can just make it up on volume? Is CoinMaster sucking all the copper out of your area? Do you get your cents all at one source or are they from different banks? Are they always bank wrapped rolls or do you sometimes get some customer wrapped rolls? Maybe wherever you are getting your pennies from is downline from where CoinMaster deposits the zinc coins they get. Then either the armored car company or the bank mixes the CoinMaster zincolns with whatever they have on hand to make new rolls and those are the rolls you are getting. Have you discovered any fast ways for freeing the cents from those tight bank rolls? Now that you can process several boxes per hour are you going to have any trouble getting enough pennies to feed the monster?
