Wow! It looks like a piece of foreign material got caught between the die and the planchet. Just Carl is the error coin specialist. Maybe he can tell you what it's worth.

I have been counting pennies for the past 6 months. I travel a little for my job and tried to stop by different banks to "buy" $25.00 boxes. Stopped the other day in a town near where I live and hit the jackpot ! (I would have bought another box, but this was last one)
1035 Pre 1982 35 Wheats (several from the teens and twenties) 28 Candians 1402 1982-on
Highlight was a 1909 v.d.b. !
That makes this roll's percentage almost 43% !

Frugi:
I appreciate all the information you bring to the table.
The idea that the Fed is sorting (mechanically) and then hoarding the copper may not be true, YET, but who knows?
I have long maintained that the price of zinc is not different enough from the price of copper to warrant sorting by hand. Mechanical sorting may be worth the effort, IF you are going melt.
As of this post 2007 Jan 26 8PM PST, the ratio stands at about 3 to 2. That is to say that 3 pieces of zinc are worth 2 pieces of copper.
I maintain that UNLESS YOU PLAN TO MELT any ratio within 2 or 3, or even 4 to one is negligible.
The big qwestion, for me at least, is this;
Is the ratio or federal reserve notes to zinc (aka the price of zinc) rising faster that the ratio of FRNs to copper (aka the price of copper)?
If zinc is rising faster than copper, then sorting is a fool's errand.
Please take the time to compare:

I say to all who will listen, don't sort your pennies by hand unless you;
1. Understand the trajectories of zinc verses copper. 2. plan to MELT your pennies 3. haven't seen enough internet pr0n (in other words, have NOTHING better to do)
Peace on Earth!

1000 FED plastic rolled lincoln cents:
1000 Cents 684 Zn 313 Cu 2 Wheatback 1 Canadian
I think the melt ban was a good thing. There must have been more than one corporation culling and melting cents by the thousands and that is what spurred the ban because since the ban came into effect my (FED rolled) counts have been consistently 10%-20% higher in copper content.

I have some reports to make also, altho they may be of limited use if the banks in question do not operate in your geographical area.
Folks at Bank of America branches in New England have consistently proven helpful and rarely bat an eye when I ask for a box of nickels and a box of pennies ($125 total face). Few will even ask if I have an account.
St. Mary's bank refuses service as a matter of policy , to non account holders.
TD banknorth and Citizens bank have said yes every time without requiring an account, but "every time" is just 2 visits to each.
Sovereign bank: I've only tried one and they grugingly made the trade but the teller was way rude. She told me they were reluctant to part with these prized coins because it costs them money to obtain them. Then she told me "don't bring them back"
That was really consistent wasn't it! I think the rest of the bank employees there decided to help me out just because she was being so rude to a potential customer.
On the other side of the coin...how difficult is it to trade nickels and pennies in for face value? How liquid are these coins at face value? Will banks refuse to take them back or what conditions will they apply? Will coin stores generally take them at face value?
bank of america told me they will take coins if rolled but will not count them. that was a year ago...no idea where they stand now.

That's why i've been using commerce bank...They coin counter/sorter in the front lobby with no fee..i think all commerces have these...They didn't bat an eye when i went in with a bag of pennies and dumped them in the coin counter...then went right to the teller and asked for rolled pennies...the counter receipt even says i deposited only pennies!

I'm glad that somebody asked the qwestion, "how difficult is it to trade nickels and pennies in for face value?" see dadaOrwell above.
A while back I heard about a guy who had some ridiculous qwantity like a million pennies. You must be logged in to see this link.
That was July of 2004. Copper was at about $1.75 at that time. Melt value was not yet an issue. These were presumably unsorted, a mixture of probably 80% zincs and 20% coppers???
The article says that the million pennies had a face value of $10,000.- and a weight of 3.6 tons.
When I buy pennies and nickles, I prefer to get transparent plastic rolls that I do NOT open. I expect to spend them as rolls in the future, and I am preserving the option of either opening them and sorting them if my "customer" wants them sorted OR leaving them in see through rolls if the customer prefers that.
Since I know that a pre 1982 penny weighs 3.1 grams, and a post 1982 weighs 2.5 grams, I can weigh the entire roll with an accurate scale and then work with a calculator for a minute and have a very good guess as to the percentage of copper in each roll.
Also copper has a density of 8.96 grams per cubic centimeter, and zinc has a density of 7.14 grams / cc.
Also
An ounce is equal to 437.5 grains, 1/16 of a pound, or 28.350 grams. 453.6 grams = one pound 1 troy ounce = 31.103 grams 1 gram = 0.0353 av ounces 1 av ounce = 28.349 grams 31.103 / 28.349 = 1.09714628382 28.349 / 31.103 = 0.911455486609 28.350 x 16 = 453.6 grams per pound 14.5838 troy ounces in one av pound
Peace to all
