I called the two largest processors in my area and they both quoted $75 a ton.

Now after negotiating with them and talking my scrap up, and letting them know Iv got 5-6 tones, I have them at $140 a ton.

Is this consistent for the rest of you?

Thanks guys,
Brian

The Big Boys in the futures market say China and India are going to push the prices higher.
Do you have the ability or luxury of waiting until the 4th of July?

There's profit if you melt things!!

4th of July??? Well... To be honest its only in my way, I am not in it any money. It took me 5 minutes on the phone to get the "big boys" aka schnitzer steel, up to those prices. I feel things are low across the board, but I didnt think it would ever drop this low.

If you all think I should sit on it, then I'll pitch my tent

CLWP,

Is that 265 a current price? If so are you doing consistant major weight? Also what part of the country?

Hey Bruce,

What is considered prepared steel in your (well our) area? I have 5-6 tones and when I called around the highest I got was $140 for unprepared and $200 for steel cut into pieces no bigger than 2x5 feet. The buyer said those pieces would not be required to be sent through the shredder and thus less work for them.

#1 for export to the overseas maket is 3' x 5' where I sell most of my steel. The #1 for local foundry is supposed to be 18" x 18" x 36" max and all of it must be at least 1/4" thick. If it fits in an oil drum, it is small enough.

the recession has busted my chops. Steel was dropped to $90.00 ton for the smaller [18" x 18" x 36"]#1 prepared and $45.00 a ton for everything else.

I'm getting what Flbandit said, $3.00 per 100 pounds. I brought a load in Tuesday. 3 cents per pound. Mine is categorized as sheet iron, (coat hangers, tin cans, cracker / cookie tins, bolts, screws, etc) They pay more for processed steel or farm equipment.
