I have some big wire here that says 300v and 500v on them.
would a scrap yard put them under #1 or #2 ins. copper?
They are black with 4 copper cords of different colors in them. This may be called double insulated.
Thanks

#1 or #2 would depend on the gauge of the strands of wire

I googled wire gauge and I got an American Wire gauge table with measurements.
I would say my wire has a .25' inch diameter or a 2 for gauge size.I measured the copper core of one of the 4 wires that is in one big black wire. |

FELLOWS, THEY'RE NOT TALKING ABOUT WIRE GAUGE WHEN THEY SAY #1 OR #2 COPPER. THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT THE WIRE SIZE, THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT THE PURITY OF THE COPPER. #1 COPPER IS 99-100% COPPER. IT'S THE COPPER USED IN WIRE. #2 COPPER IS 94-99% COPPER. PENNIES ARE 95% COPPER AND 5% ZINC MAKING THEM #2 COPPER. YOUR WIRE IS #1 COPPER CAUSE IT'S WIRE. BUT TO BE #1 CLEAN COPPER YOU NEED TO TAKE OFF THE INSULATION. OTHERWISE IT'S "DIRTY" AND YOU WILL GET LESS FOR IT. IT'S OK THAT THEY DON'T SEE IT WITH IT'S INSULATION ON, THEY KNOW IT IS WIRE AND THEREFORE #1!

Retmon is right, but make sure its even copper it might be copper coated wire, or the copper might be coated in zinc which would make it look green. either way strip it or burn it.

Yes, but my place also has grades for #1 Insulated Cu Wire (ICW), and #2 ICW. #1 is 16G or thicker. Completely stripping them will get a different grade altogether - #1 copper - the same as clean pipe. Example prices may be #2 ICW - $1.25, #1 ICW - $1.75, #1 Cu - $2.25.
For me, #1 ICW is usually worth stripping, #2 ICW is not.

The way I usually do is it us get a bunch of ICW together and burn it all together at one time and turn it into the junk yard for #1 copper as retmon said.

You are correct. Same here.
